COVID 19 Semaforo December 13 – 19

Semaforo December 13 – 19

The traffic light from December 13 to 19 marks the GREEN 1st STAGE throughout Quintana Roo. We have an increase in the rate of infections, which means that we are approaching yellow.

The previous week the state had advanced to the SECOND STAGE of GREEN at 100% aperture. The first stage takes us back to 80% aperture and threatens to slip to YELLOW bringing further restrictions. Let us maintain good health and vaccination habits and precautions.

Cozumel Children receive COVID Vaccine

Cozumel News December 10, 2021 Continued

Children ages 12 to 17 received the first dose of the Pfizer COVID vaccine on December 9th and 10th. My sources tell me they are moving towards having all the children vaccinated by February to be able to return full time to the classrooms.

24-hour testing Prior to heading to United States

Reminder: On December 6, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will implement a one-day COVID-19 testing requirement for travelers over age two coming to the United States. Regardless of vaccination status or nationality, any individual coming to the United States must show a negative pre-departure COVID-19 viral test taken the day before they board their flight to the United States. You must show your negative result to the airline before you board your flight.

If you recently recovered from COVID-19, you may instead travel with documentation of recovery from COVID-19 (i.e., your positive COVID-19 viral test result on a sample taken no more than 90 days before the flight’s departure from a foreign country, and a letter from a licensed healthcare provider or a public health official stating that you were cleared to travel).

These requirements are for all air passengers two years of age or older boarding a flight from a foreign country to the United States

What is you Cozumel Zip Code?

Cozumel News December 10, 2021

The zip codes have changed in Cozumel over the years as the city and colonies grow. Our zip code in Colonia Independencia is 77664. The best way to ensure that you are using the proper zip code is to consult your CFE bill. You will find that other correspondence such as the cellular invoices use whatever zip code you originally gave them.

Protecting your ATM Information

How to Protect Yourself from ATM Fraud

The last issue of the Cozumel Sun featured an article ¨A safety precaution when using an ATM.¨ This information came from the ¨Vecino Vigilante¨ group monitored by the State Police. I did not therefore seek to verify the information. A reader contacted me stating this will not work. I have researched and found nothing confirming that it works, nor disputing that it will not work. (Thankfully, pushing the cancel button twice will not hurt anything either.). I am therefore sharing the information I did find on safely using an ATM.

Identity thieves have developed tricks they can use to steal your personal information.

Skimming.

Skimming is when people steal your Personal Identification Number (PIN) and account number using devices known as skimmers.

One method of skimming is to place a device near an ATM that automatically reads the magnetic strip on your card.

Another method is using a camera hidden from view. The camara captures your PIN number. Once the thieves have this data, they can copy your account number to a blank card and use it to access your money.

How to Protect Yourself from ATM Fraud

An EMV chip in your ATM or Debit Card instead of a magnetic strip makes it harder to skim the information off your card.

Cover Your PIN Code When Using an ATM

Always use your hand to cover the keypad when you are using an ATM machine. Never use an ATM machine if there is someone else standing near you and never write your PIN down. Never give your PIN number to anyone.

Use Familiar ATMs

Try to use the same ATM. By doing so, you are more likely to notice if something is wrong with the ATM. For example, you might notice your card does not swipe as easily or there are errors with the transaction. You might even realize the machine looks off somehow if an identity thief puts a skimmer on top of the card slot.

Keep an eye on the ATM’s Behavior

Pay attention to anything that seems unusual about the ATM. Examples of red flags are the ATM is unusually slow, freezes, or asks for your PIN number twice. Try using a different ATM just to be on the safe side.

Look for Hidden Cameras

While there is a visible camera inside the ATM, thieves might have hidden another camera that will let them see you enter your PIN number. Look for any hole or slot that might look out of place. If in doubt, avoid using that ATM and go to another one.

Sign Up for Account Alerts

If your financial institution offers alerts, sign up for them. The financial institution will notify you each time that your credit or Debit card used to make a transaction.

Check Account Balances Frequently

Get into the habit of checking your account balance at least once a week to make sure you are safe. Report any discrepancies to your financial institution immediately. The longer you wait, the less chance there is that you will get reimbursed.
