Getting Cozumel Finances back in Order

The new administration faces the challenge of starting with a deficit of two hundred and fifty million pesos in debt. One hundred and thirty million of the debt was reported to be from the previous administration; the balance was carried over from the administration before them.

Municipal President Fredy Marrufo Martin wasted no time in restructuring the workforce at the Municipal Palace. In order to be financially stable, they are implementing a 15% reduction in salary for upper level management positions, elimination of some departments, merging of some departments, and elimination of some positions.

According to the bulletin issued, Municipal President, Fredy Marrufo Martin along with council members and department heads of the City, toured the colonies covering San Miguel II, Extension Emiliano Zapata, CTM and the Colonia Centro, to fulfill his campaign promise of street resurfacing, street lighting, construction and maintenance of wind absorption.

He led the patching program, starting on Avenida Xel-Ha in both lanes, similarly gave the green light for the construction of a soak pit on Avenue 100, Colonia Emiliano Zapata Extension.

In San Miguel II, it was  an upgrade  to a park, called “The Ramp”, benefiting cozumeleñas families and especially young practitioners of skateboarding, a sport that has had great demand among the community.

Martin Marrufo performed landscaping and trimming, supplied and planted many ornamental plants native to the island, to improve the appearance of walls and fences, as well as the rehabilitation of all lighting in different areas of the park.

A Reminder that tomorrow, Sunday October 6th, Cozumel hosts the Word Cup 2013 Triathlon. This triathlon consists of a 750 meters swim, a 20 kilometer bike ride and a five thousand meter run.

The women’s circuit will start with the swimming event at 10:15 a.m. from the San Miguel Pier, and swim north to finish on Rafael E. Melgar Avenue in front of the Museum of the island. The men’s start at 12:00 pm, and follow the same route. The triathlon is estimated to finish by one thirty, so get there on time!

There is an agreement between the City and the company Diamonds International, of Israeli origin, to change the proposed construction of a building in Benito Juarez Park.  Last April the municipal government sold an area of 703.6 square meters on Avenue Rafael E. Melgar to Diamonds International for 16.8 million pesos. Construction of the Jewelry Store began three months later. However, disagreements have arisen about the dimensions of the building to be constructed. It is expected that next week the Jewelry giant will present new plans to bring the building into compliance and construction will resume.
