Cozumel will be getting a home for the tourists boats that can be seen picking up tourists signed up to dive and snorkel downtown. The Director of the Port Authority of Quintana Roo, Barron Barrera, confirmed that construction will start on a structure that will house two docks during the first quarter of 2014. The new structure is to be located next to the passenger ferry.

The project has been in the works for four years and the estimated cost has increased from the initial eight million, to fourteen million pesos. The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT) finally approved the Environmental Impact Statement this week

The plan includes two docks that will occupy an area of 4914.5 square meters of reinforced concrete covered with treated timber. The two docks will be connected with each other and the mainland by bridges.  It will have a capacity for 12 boats up to 40 feet long and 36 boats up to 30 feet in length.
