Reminder: Town Hall Meeting this Friday at 3 p.m.!!

diver1Diver Arrested at Punta Langosta Pier

February 11 -. A foreigner dove  near the cruise ship “Disney” minutes before it was due to sail on Monday night, leading to the mobilization of elements of the Naval Sector, who detained him and turned him over  to the Federal Public Ministry. The hull was checked to verify that it was safe before moving on to the next destination. This is  the second time this has happened in the same dock in just over a year.

It was learned that at 7:25 pm on Monday,  a person named Jorge Gutierrez, manager of the Punta Langosta Pier, on Avenida Rafael E. Melgar between 7 and 11 South, sought support from the Naval Sector because a person was diving at that time a few meters away from the ship “Disney” that was preparing to start maneuvers to depart to their next destination.

On arrival the authorities discovered a diver named John Micksch, 32, a native of Denver, Colorado, United States. This person who apparently resides in Cozumel was arrested and turned over to the Federal Public Ministry, although what he was charged with has not been released.

An incident of this nature affects the itinerary of the ship operations, since in this case the operator of Punta Langosta had to hire a team of divers to inspect the entire hull and double check that there was no danger for the ship before it could continue its established route.

Further-more,   these incidents place the person who swims or dives next to  these large vessels in grave danger because of their powerful engines.

This is the second time a similar situation has happened in that dock in just over a year.  The first occurred on January 28, 2013 when two Canadian nationals dove near Westerdam of the Seas, a ship flying a Dutch flag. The two people were detained and the ship’s hull was inspected.

presidentialThe  Last Minute Cancellation of the Air Show

The Arrival of Enrique Peña Nieto, the President of the Republic, in Cozumel to participate in a civic ceremony celebrating the 70th  Anniversary of the Creation of the Mexican Air Force was cancelled quietly and at the last minute. The cancellation was confirmed by Mexican Army personnel and City of Cozumel, but no reason was specified.

The visit by Presidentl Enrique Peña Nieto was announced in mid-January, detailing that he would lead the event that would have the presence of military attaches of other countries and important personalities of the Federal Cabinet, including General Salvador Zepeda Cienfuegos who heads the Department of Defense. The arrival of the President of Mexico was so sure that a few weeks ago Presidential staff (EMP) arrived on the island to work on logistics in connection with his visit. He was also to inaugurate a new monument honoring the 201 squadron. It appears that the monument is unfinished.
