The Waterfront in Cozumel went Dark!
The boardwalk in Cozumel extinguished the lights for 60 minutes to join the Earth Hour as planned last Saturday. Between two thousand and two thousand 500 thousand people attended the Earth Hour race, Cozumel’s part in a world-wide event.
For 60 minutes runners of all ages and all levels enjoyed this activity in the dark waterfront. First out were top athletes followed by amateurs and finally people with disabilities. Whole families, including pets, toured a circuit of three miles. Present were the Mayor Efren Fredy Marrufo Martin and his wife, President of DIF Gina Ruiz de Marrufo. After the race participants raised luminous globes that marked the dark sky in that part of town.
Biologist Esteban Quijano Hernandez told attendees that turning off the lights for one hour helps but is not the solution. He said, “We need to instill in our children and adults to raise awareness of the need to reduce energy consumption.”
Second Bid for Aero-Golf Course
Local entrepreneurs are on the second attempt to obtain environmental permits for the construction of an 18 hole golf course and a residential land aerodrome. The project would be located on the airfield in the south of Cozumel and requires an investment of 819.59 million pesos.
According to the electronic gazette of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT) on March 19, 2014, company representatives of Drivers’ Club Isla Cozumel Ltd. presented the study of Environmental Impact Assessment (MIA) for the project called “Real Estate Development Aero Golf” which was registered under file 23QR2014TD013.
During 2013, SEMARNAT dismissed the application for the project because the plaintiffs did not meet the requirements. Cozumel has the golf course “Country Club” designed by Nicklaus Design Group which is located at 6.5 km north of the hotel zone. This project would be located on the airfield in the south of Cozumel.
