RescueRescue at Chen Rio

There was another heroic rescue of tourists by the bodyguards from the civil Protection this past week. Three Cruise passengers that had arrived on Carnival Paradise were rescued, unharmed, on Chen Rio beach, after they were dragged out to sea by an ocean current.

beaches Leandro Esquivel, a lifeguard, was watching the activities of people on the beach this past Tuesday, when he suddenly noticed that the three tourists that had been playing with the waves were being swept away by an undertow out to sea.  According to the report, Roberts Arbers, 48, Joseph Arbers 17, and William Allison 17, from Atlanta, Georgia  were seen struggling around 13:45 hours.

Leandro Esquivel immediately called for support by radio to other lifeguards that were on San Martín Beach. He was quickly joined by lifeguards Carlos Ceballos and Denis Caztín, and together the three brought the swimmers to safety.  The tourists were checked over by paramedics, and opted not to be seen at a clinic, instead returned to their ship.

Warning: The Eastern side of Cozumel in my opinion is the most beautiful. However, the sea is as dangerous as it is beautiful. Everyone should obey the signs and not enter the sea when so designated and swim only in areas monitored by bodyguards. There are serious currents and undertow not to be played with!

eastern beachesGetting San Martin Beach Ready for Easter

Authorities and volunteer groups are taking part in the Municipal Relief Plan Easter Tourism  2014. The campaign was initiated today to replace beach flags and signs (and repair lifeguard towers) in advance of the Easter Vacation crowds.

beaches1An inspection of the area found red flags of different materials, bleached by the sun, and towers in deplorable conditions for monitoring bathers on the beach of San Martín. Despite the imminent start of the Easter holidays, and the number of visitors already arriving at the San Martin beach daily, no new posts or flags have been installed until today leaving only the old ones gnawed and bleached by the sun, rain, wind and salt, giving a pitiful look to the beach.

beaches3The color of the fabric attached to the posts allows visitors to know if they should not enter to swim or if they could swim, but to do so with great caution. Signs in Spanish and English are placed accordingly to inform bathers of the risks of getting into sea with strong waves. In 2013 there were 94 recorded water rescues, 90 of these rescues were in Playa San Martin.

federales3Extra Security for the Holiday

The Federal Police will join in the surveillance of the streets in the city and coastal roads, because of the massive influx of visitors that come to Cozumel annually at Easter. Also available to the public is the number 088 to report crimes like car thefts, robberies and the drug dealing trade. The 088 is a national network that after receiving the complaint, channels the information towards the base of the Federal Police of the municipality where the support is requested.

Gerardo Martínez Rojas, Chief of the Federal Police, which is based at the Cozumel International Airport, stated that his forces will assist at the request of the local government and that they are here to support and serve so that everyone can spend their holidays happy in the most pleasant tourist destination in the country. ”

7 PM will be the deadline for swimmers on the east coast during Spring Break Week.  This will give everyone one hour to leave the east side of the island before the access roads are closed. Access Roads to the Eastern side will be closed at 8 PM. There is no lighting on the beaches in the eastern side of the island. Businesses and beach clubs close before dark.

The eastern coast will be monitored by members of City Transit. There will be patrols on all the roads and beaches continually over the vacation by different elements of the police and military. Citizens are asked to respect the speed limits, Transit signals, and not drive while under the influence of alcoholic beverages, all to avoid accidents.

Cozumel ThrasherSeeking the “Cozumeleño Thrasher”

City Hall released a statement that specialists have arrived on the island of Cozumel to conduct an extensive search, for a bird called the “Cozumeleño Thrasher.”

Biologist Martin Schaefer, from Freiburg, Germany, accompanied by Juan Martínez and Ariadna Tobon Sampedro are researchers and technicians from a conservation project for species at risk.

Federico Ruiz Piña, Technical Secretary of The Sustainable Development of the City, said that as part of the directive of Mayor Fredy Marrufo Martin, the work of this project has the full support of the Municipal Government.  He said the  “Cozumeleño Thrasher ” is an  emblematic bird species in Mexico and that it is in risk of extinction, and could even now be officially declared extinct.

Although Isla Mujeres and Cancun have tried to believe that the first rays of the sun arrive there first, they have been proven to be   completely wrong.  The island of Cozumel is considered the first point in the country where the first rays of sunlight come and this has been supported by specialists.

Federico Ruiz Piña, who is a tireless advocate of this theory of the sun, said that specialists have demonstrated that Cozumel is the first point of the country where the sun rises and that there are studies that support this.

Statewide, three sites are privileged to be the first to receive the caresses of Lord Sun, Cozumel with Punta Molas, Cancún with Punta Cancún, and Isla Mujeres with Punta Sur. The difference between sunrises at each location is seconds. Federico Ruiz Piña said, “For many years where first rays of the sun in Mexico are handled wrongly, the information is not correct. It has been shown that the sun’s rays arrive first to Cozumel and then to Isla Mujeres and then Cancun.”

He   stressed that this special phenomenon of the sun that only happens in Cozumel should be used by those in charge of promoting the island. Since no other location has the privileged of receiving the first rays of a new era, Cozumel could capitalize on its promotion of the island.  Pre-Hispanic Maya were sun worshipers that studied the sun for centuries and dominated the field. They became experts in their annual cycles, equinoxes, solstices, and positions at dawn and dusk. Researchers are convinced that Cozumel is the first site of Mexico which is bathed in sunlight.
