beach bus2According to the operators of the “Sponge Bob” bus, the cost is 18 pesos for adults and 13 pesos for children. Rates for the Uniper buses, which are known as “Nemo” & “Dory” are said to be similar. Both companies provide the service from their base located on Juarez Avenue between 70th and 75th Avenue. They provide transport to beaches like Playa Bonita, Chen Rio or Punta Morena and Mezcalitos.

This is the perfect time to take advantage of a trip to the mainland for shopping or a visit. Transcribe is going all out and giving an almost 50% discount on transportation to and from Playa Del Carmen.  bike path1Dangerous bike paths

Several sections of the bike path on the east side of the island are hampered by sand on the pavement and in some more points on the cross-road, the vegetation begins to invade  portions of the route, both create a danger to cyclists and motorcyclists passing through that road faster than 40 miles per hour.

img_1397450117_f8a6faf9976190ca1575Along some stretches of the bike path some strips of sand on the pavement can be seen. This sand was taken from the coastal dunes of those beaches by strong winds. Nothing has been done by authorities to sweep it off. There is visible danger from San Martín Beach up to Punta Morena resort, where two areas are covered with a quantity of sand that  can cause a cyclist or a biker to skid.

Regarding the rising greenery, you may notice at some points of the cross road at kilometer 10 almost reaching Mezcalitos, there are branches of vegetation that have not been pruned. The vegetation reaches into the bike path in places, another hazard to bicycles and motorcycles.

international bike dayInternational Bicycle Day

The first annual International Bicycle Day will be held in Cozumel on April 19th to encourage the use of bicycles on the island. The social networks are promoting the daily use of a bicycle as a benefit to health as well as an environmentally friendly and sustainable transport.

There are 47 thousand vehicles of which about 22,000 are motorcycles. Although it is increasingly common to see cyclists in the city, the number of these is unknown since most are not registered.  By encouraging the use of bicycles authorities seek to avoid the city being saturated by motor vehicles in the coming years.

bicyclesPedro Fernando Ek, member of the “Cozumel Bicicletero” group formed in February 2014,  stated that people of all ages are encouraged to participate in the bike ride. The event is scheduled for  six p.m. and it is completely free. The article stated that participants must “emplacar” their bicycles in order to qualify for the raffle of a bicycle. (But there was no mention on how to do this).

The starting point is the parking lot of the Bicentennial Sports Unit and the goal is the Quintana Roo Park, opposite the town hall.
