Cozumel News July 2nd, 2014: Canadian Journalists Feature Cozumel – Three Food Kitchens to Open in Cozumel – Ferry Routes to Increase – Important Documents.

Canadian Journalists Feature Cozumel

A press release reported that “The Expeditioners Magazine”, specializing in adventure travel and extreme sports did a story on the attractions of the Island of the Swallows.

According to the Municipal Tourism Director Juan Gonzalez Castelán, journalists Roberto and Bella Gibbsons, from Canada, toured the island from June 20 to July 1, The Director of Tourism said that through the website www.theexpeditioners.com; of Instagram @ theexpeditioners; theexpeditioners @ twitter and Facebook, and The Expeditioners, the Gibbsons show landmarks that they have visited including  “Chankanaab”, “Punta Sur”, the archaeological sites of the island,  and other images of Cozumel that highlight the beauty of the sea.

Three Food Kitchens to Open in Cozumel

The National Campaign against Hunger started last week and according to the head of the Directorate of Social Development, Marilyn Rodriguez Marrufo, there are no indications of extreme poverty on the island. Previously, The Ministry of Social Development, (SEDESOL) conducted a study in the urban area and the program could be in place by July 15^th. They are moving forward to take part in the campaign by opening three soup kitchens to help people who need food.

The registration for the program started on July 1^st and will continue until July 14^th. They hope to register 240 people, including infants, pregnant women, infants, elderly people, and disabled people, among others. Registrants will have to undergo a socioeconomic study to make sure that they need support, and can also be referred to other programs as needed.

SEDESOL shall install one food kitchen in the Community Development Center (CDC) “Froylán Lopez” in Colonia Maravilla, and one in the CDC Colonia 10 de Abril. The location of the third food kitchen is yet to be determined.

The soup kitchens will serve two meals per day.  These kitchens will have  cooking equipment and storage. The kitchen staff will be trained through a federal agency in the preparation of food based on canned goods and powdered foods.

Ferry Routes to Increase

Operations manager of the Port Authority of Quintana Roo (Apiqroo) and manager of the San Miguel sea terminal, Saul Camargo Chavez,  announced that they are waiting for the two shipping companies that offer the service of the federal highway between Playa del Carmen and Cozumel or vice versa, to report scheduling for the implementation of the four extra routes.

The two Ferry Companies México Waterjets and Ultra Mar will be once again providing more trips to Playa del Carmen for the summer holidays. An article in Por Esto stated that some four thousand passengers daily take the ferry to and from Playa del Carmen. It is expected that during the summer holidays this figure will more than double to eleven thousand passengers. Here are links to check out their schedules:

Important Documents in Cozumel

Every official document is important in Mexico. There is a lot of red tape involved to acquire them, and even more red tape if you lose them. It is imperative that you keep all your documents and documentation organized and current. You must keep copies of ALL the documents that you carry with you in your purse, wallet or vehicle.  Even if you keep these documents in a safe until you are ready to use them, it is good practice to have a copy.

Have copies of your Passport, CURP, Plan Locale, INAPAN, Driver’s License, FPMC, AND your Immigration Card.

At home in a safe place you MUST keep the following documents:

–       Official Certified Birth Certificate & Certified Translation

–       Official Marriage License & Certified Translation

–       Last Will & Testament  from your Country of Citizenship & Mexican Last Will & Testament

–       Power of Attorney (Officially translated if not filed in Mexico)

–       Living Will Officially Translated

–       Burial / Cremation Preferences Officially translated & notarized.

–       Keep Receipts of Paid Taxes and Utilities for 5 years

–       Homeowners: Deeds & Land Trust documents & Insurance

–       Renters: Rental Contract & Receipts of payments

–       Vehicles: Permits, Ownership, taxes, & Insurance

–       Business Owners: Ownership Documents, Paperwork, receipts, taxes & Insurance

–       Business Owners instructions for termination of employees in the event of your death.

–       Banking: Documents & an authorized backup person you can entrust to withdraw your funds to pay your expenses should you be incapacitated, hospitalized, or pay           for your burial expenses in the event of your death.

There are important Documents that you will need to apply for, some mandatory and some that will give you discounted services. Here are step by step instructions on how to apply for CURP, PLAN LOCALE, INAPAM, DRIVER’S license, and the FUNDACION DE PARQUES Y MUSEO DE COZUMEL credentials. The CURP is important as I will later explain in detail because you need it to apply for other credentials. So apply for your CURP first. A Mexican Driver’s License is mandatory to drive in Mexico if you have a Permanent Residence status. The other three cards are equally important because they will enable you to receive discounts only available to residents on the island.
