Bee Attack
It was reported that on July 16th two people were taken to the hospital for observation after being attacked and bitten by a swarm of bees in a private section of Playa Mia. Firefighters have removed 168 bee hives this year. It is typical that bees become upset during extra hot weather, typically during the months of August through October. They reported that 610 “swarms” were removed last year; I am assuming they mean hives.
Lost In the Jungle
Since Cozumel is one of the smallest places I have ever lived in, I have never thought of it as a place one could get lost. Of course, I would also never venture into the miles of undeveloped “jungle” we have on the island. Until you come over the island by airplane, you tend to forget it is there.
On Monday morning, July 14, Miguel Angel Heredia Rivero, a 53-year-old was conducting land clearing and leveling in the back part of the town of Cedral. He was hired by the Ferinco Company as part of an ecotourism development of the land used for ATVs by the company “Wild Tour.”
Rivero Heredia remembering stories told by his family, decided to explore beyond the field, but then could not get out of the place. During the first night, it seems he suffered a seizure that caused him a loss of sense of space and time, so he walked around aimlessly.
He was found Tuesday evening around seven forty, although dehydrated on a dirt road in the area where he went astray. He stated he wanted tacos and a beer as all he had had was water from a Cenote. He was taken to the hospital for observation and according to medical diagnosis; he has kidney problems presented by the lack of water, and medicine for the more than 36 hours that he remained lost.
His daughter, Irene, said she is grateful to all the people who were involved to search for her father. “We are grateful to God and to people who devoted themselves to find him because we feared the worst because of his epileptic seizures.”
Management staff of Civil Protection and Fire Department led by Lucio Alberto Andrade and May Canul Borges, as well as police and elements of the military garrison “combed” the area until midnight on Monday. Rested for five hours and resumed searching with the first rays of sun on Tuesday.

Fiesta Americana Opening Postponed
There is a delay of up to five weeks in the re-opening of Fiesta Americana, originally scheduled to open on July 15th. The lacks of permits, and the weather, were given as the reason for the postponement of the remodeling, which began in May of last year. Fiesta Americana, at kilometer 7.5 of the coastal road south, had in 2013 with 88 rooms, and is expected to bid this August or early September, with a new concept, 102 Suites, a spa care center and a cyclist-pedestrian walk, to sensitized guests about the importance of preserving the environment. The company is still in negotiations with the union, but has promised to re-employ about 90% of the people that lost their jobs.
Second Annual Open House at Military Base
Brigadier General DEM Rene Carranza Garcia, commander of the military garrison announced that again this year they will open the base to the public. The “open house” will be Sunday, July 20th, from 8 a.m. to noon. Attendees will get to learn about the military garrison, the Air Base, Sub-Centro Diving, Weather Station, Photo Exhibition and the 201 Squadron aircraft, while enjoying different activities.
King Burrito Express, Cozumel
King Burrito Express is now located on the Coastal Highway KM 2.5, not far from The Blue Angel Resort. Owners Jaime and Haidee Gonzales have brought yet another quality restaurant to Cozumel with a flavor you will not want to miss! If you have not already done so, you must try a Burrito from King Burrito Express.
When they first opened, they were right at the end of my block on 35th Avenue South and Avenue Xel Ha. My large family does not eat out very often, so it took a while for me to venture over to the new neighbors and introduce myself.
One purchase and I was hooked. Their Burritos are huge and filling, complimented with Spanish rice, beans, lettuce, and lots of love. The price was right and I was able to buy one large and three regular size burritos and satisfy five adults and two children.
The Burrito’s are a style common in central Mexico, so expect a different twist from what you may have experienced. Jaime is from Guadalajara and Haidee is from Chetumal. They both lived in California, USA at one time in the past and speak perfect English.
I love their new location! They now have sitting inside and outside of the restaurant with a perfect view of the sea. Their hours are Monday through Saturday 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. but they will stay opened later if they are busy! Today I went all out and ordered one of each burrito, so I could decide on a favorite other than the Shrimp one that I love. (Everyone’s favorite is their famous Shrimp Burrito). I have only managed to make future choices even harder, I liked them all.
King Burrito Express is a family operated restaurant, go introduce yourselves and tell them you heard about them in The Cozumel Sun!
