Cozumel City Requests Online

A Municipal Information System called “Ayuntanet” began operations this past Wednesday. This tool will allow citizens to receive attention on a timely basis and enable them to follow their requests or transactions online, according to a press release.

Mayor, Fredy Martin Marrufo stated that this platform was added to the various means that the inhabitants of Cozumel currently have, allowing citizens easy access to various procedures and services of the municipality and provide tracking information.

He explained that “Ayuntanet” is available through the website of the Municipal Government:  http://www.cozumel.gob.mx/2014/. Any citizen can now access easily and in a timely manner a catalog consisting of 45 services and 143 procedures.

Chankanaab Makes Improvements: Chankanaab has opened access to tour the facility and the area where the  “Half Ironman”, swim event will take place.  4, 215 square meters of the access road to Chankanaab, are ready to welcome Triathletes. A ramp was also placed for competitors to participate in various sporting events of national and international levels.

These improvements will provide better care to athletes participating in the MetLife Cozumel Ironman 70.3 World Championship Triathlon (ITU), and the Ford Ironman Cozumel 2014, who use this road, both for training and for days of the competition.

Cozumel International Day of Cleaning the Beaches

The Foundation Parks and Museums Cozumel (FPMC) is hosting the “International Day of Cleaning Beaches”, an activity that the FPMC pioneered and has taken place in this country since 1989. According to Héctor González Cortés, Director of the Conservation Agency of the State of Quintana Roo, this year marks the 25th year of FPMC participation. Approximately 123 countries have participated, with 648, 0 15 volunteers around the world gathering 12, 329, 332 pounds of trash in 12,914 miles of beaches.

The beach cleanup promoted by the FPMC will be held on Saturday, September 20th on the beaches of the eastern coast. The event starts at seven o’clock, gathering area will be visible. Join in, or bring your own bags and friends to participate.

Our own “Trashy Little Group” (pictured above) volunteer beach cleanup in Cozumel year around, along with other wonderful people. It is a great source of exercise, getting fresh air and sunshine, and meeting new people. Let’s see how many people we can get out there Saturday to keep our beaches beautiful!

Aurita’s Corner

Are you getting your “Ducks in Order Yet?” I have had a wonderful response to my article on what you need to do to ensure that in case of an emergency you have all your documentation in order, per Mexican Legal Standards, to enable a person or persons that you designate  to take care of you and your affairs. If you have not read it yet, I encourage you to do so.

One thought that I would like to add to the idea of the Emergency Contact Cards: ADD YOUR HOSPITAL PREFERENCE. Remember, in Cozumel we are having the ambulance drivers compete to get patients to designated hospitals. You do not want to have coverage at IMSS or General Hospital and wake up with a huge bill at CMC!

In case you have not heard, there is a large uproar happening in Cozumel about the turn Cruz Roja Cozumel is taking. Once free and economical, Cruz Roja is now charging for all the services it provides, and charging private clinic prices at that. If you need a prescription or inexpensive consultation while you are deciding what medical insurance you should sign up for (PER MY INSTRUCTIONS), most Dr. Simis discount Pharmacies have Doctors available for consultations and prescriptions that are very affordable. Yes, that is the one with the big dancing Doctor outside that grows on you. In the mean time, I will keep an ear to the ground and let you know when the Cruz Roja returns to its original mission statement to help the poor.

Like one of my readers commented, we think we are going to live forever. Nope, we go out, more often than not, unexpectedly, and do so usually one at a time. Many times we leave behind the spouse that does not have a clue. One of the first articles that I wrote in “Tiempo de Cozumel” was my experience when my husband Charles had a major stroke in 2005.

Not to repeat the entire story, he was totally paralyzed, and we were in Florida. We lived in Minnesota, and the medical  insurance  did not cover medical transportation to get us back home. We were too faraway for those volunteer medical flights.  We lived very comfortably we had great jobs made good money, home, boat, marina slip, the works. Being a second marriage for both, we came in with our  own bank accounts, our own bills, and we divided the household bills.

I had my own internet sales business. No sale, no income. Charles had sick pay that went directly into his account. I had no way to access the only money coming in.

He had told me on more than one occasion that all his passwords were in this special program on his computer. I had paid no attention and did not record the password for that program or the password to get into his computer! I was going to get around to it someday, after all, he was a Homicide Investigator, and what could possibly happen!

It took a year for Charles to learn to do everything again, walk, talk, and all the basics. When he could speak he had aphasia and memory loss. I had no clue, who we owed, what we owed, who got paid what. I found everything out the hard way, including the fact that our health insurance was worthless and Charles did not qualify for Social Security! It did not take long to go through all the savings. Charles and I lost everything and had to start all over again because we did not have our ducks in order, do not let it happen to you!

Those of you that are a couple, share all the information. If only one of you handles everything, teach the other. If you are single or widowed, get your friends in order. If you had the courage to move to a new country, learn a new culture, far away from home country and family, you certainly should have no problems asking someone to have your back.

Please do not be like that person the police discovered dead in their home that had gone unnoticed for days, or the other person we had to take up a collection to give a decent burial! That is not what we came to paradise to do. I,  for one do not want the people of Mexico that have graciously invited us into their country to get the impression that we do not take care of ourselves and each other.
