Cozumel News November 4th, 2014: Cozumel Municipal Cemeteries, Cozumel Discounts Announced, the Cozumel Calendar of Events for November 2014 and Aurita’s corner with my review of Day of the Dead in Cozumel.
Cozumel Municipal Cemeteries
The City of Cozumel operates the two cemeteries in town. The one downtown in called the Municipal cemetery, the second one is Mansion de Paz. They are at 85% capacity and lots are going fast in the newer cemetery Mansion de Paz. I purchased a lot a few years ago in an area that was completely vacant. There are only a couple of spaces left in the vicinity. Construction started this week on our family mausoleum. The manager of Mansion the Paz is a member of our church and a neighbor. He does not speak English, but if anyone is interested in purchasing a lot or vault, I will personally assist you.

Aurita’s Corner
I went to visit my mother’s grave last November and noticed that just about every grave around us had a bottle of beer or other alcoholic beverage along with fresh flowers. Upon inquiring, it was explained to me that on the Day of the dead there is a ritual of building an altar to your loved ones that includes some of their favorite things
As it turned out, the second fell on Sunday this year and it was announced in church that services would be held at both cemeteries at ten in the morning and four in the afternoon. I organized to transport my extended families and a friend to attend the service at Mansion de Paz and return to my home for a traditional pozole meal.
It was an experience that I will never forget. There had to be a thousand people in attendance easily. The City had provided a few tents and hundreds of chairs that were quickly filled. There were more people standing than seated and throughout the service, more kept coming. I did not catch the name of the Priest that held the mass, but I am determined to track him down. He looked like George Lopez the Mexican American Comedian and had his wit and humor. In a solemn ceremony held in a cemetery, he managed to get the crowd laughing on a number of occasions.
Not one to be outdone, after the service we set Mama up with her flowers, a candle, a plate with her favorite things (Banana, Apple, Sweet breads) and to one up her neighbors a little bottle of tequila and a shot glass.
It was an absolutely beautiful morning; even the weather cooperated with a nice breeze for the hundreds that did not have the shade of the tents. The only time my emotions got away with me was when we accompanied our family members to place flowers on their 21-year-old son’s grave. (He died in a motorcycle accident only a few weeks ago).
The experience was rewarding in a way that I cannot explain, I want to say that it was healing. The sermon was so uplifting and appropriate and dealt with loving and caring for the living while they are here. However, he dashed my hopes for the resurrection when he announced that we will be coming back in the same body. I am screwed people!
