Gina Marufo

Cozumel’s First Lady Georgina Ruiz de Marrufo

Last Saturday I was out taking advantage of the Buen Fin sale and recognized Cozumel’s First Lady Georgina Ruiz de Marrufo, shopping at Chedraui. I have been meaning to contact her to ask for assistance in a fundraiser to bring gently used motorcycle helmets to donate to the people of Cozumel. The fundraiser was created by Greg Sebally of Michigan and is now in the stage of needing a local sponsoring organization to deal with Aduana and the distribution.

After a second of hesitation, I approached her and introduced myself, my son Bartolo, and my friend Patricia Hamp that was shopping with us. To my delight, she was very down to earth and charming! She asked to be called “Gina” and immediately scheduled an appointment to meet with me at noon on Monday.

gina4I followed through with the appointment and she promised to assist us with our fundraiser. I took the opportunity to ask her what our community can do to assist her. She asked for our support in the fundraisers for the people of Las Fincas. She delivered 350 blankets to them this Saturday but it represented only one blanket per family. That area gets very cold this time of year. Please donate new or gently used blankets and sweaters for these families.

gina2She also spoke of her special project, the participation of disabled children in the Cozumel Carnival. As you recall, she instituted the participation of DIF in Carnival 2014.  For the first time in Cozumel history a new category of Carnival Royalty  was added, a King and Queen was crowned that had autism. The first Lady of Cozumel is asking for our help in raising money that is needed for the children’s costumes and other costs associated with their participation in Cozumel Carnival 2015.

gina3If possible, Georgina Ruiz de Marrufo is even more beautiful in person and that beauty is surpassed by her personality, charm and intelligence. DIF Cozumel is a vital part of the Cozumel Community providing social services, medical and dental services, therapy and all kinds of support to people of all ages. Please keep them in mind for donations and volunteer opportunities.
