Cozumel DIF to host “Dia de la Familia”
The System for Integral Family Development (DIF) of Cozumel, chaired by Señora Gina Ruiz de Marrufo will hold “Día de la Familia”. Family Strengthening Coordinator, Sergio Faugier García, announced, “Family Day” will be celebrated on Sunday 1 March. He reported that the activities will take place beginning at 5:00 p.m. at 10 de Abril Park, in the Colony of the same name. A mini rally will be held followed by a film screening.
He explained that the rally will have a maximum quota to 10 families who will have to decipher clues with information on values that are used in the program “Good Treatment in the Family”; also, a film will be screened whose themes revolve around family togetherness. The Coordinator invited the community to take part in these activities that seeks to convey the values of the most important unit of society: the family.
Cozumel DIF Senior Center
An increasing number of seniors are attending the Senior Center for recreation and entertainment, and interaction with other seniors daily. There are 89 young at heart seniors currently attending the Senior Day Center belonging to the System for Integral Family Development (DIF) of Cozumel.
The Abuelitos are offered a range of activities to do including primary classes and computer classes from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Workshops offered include makings hammocks, embroidery, knitting, sewing and crafts. Physical activities include dance classes and aerobics. Likewise, older adults have the possibility of belonging to the choir, to play in a team of Cachibol or just relaxing and spend hours playing dominoes. Cozumel seniors have participated in state contests and have to date always brought home one of the first three place wins.
Renate Herberger Thanks Cozumel
The Mayor, Fredy Martin Marrufo, was recognized by Renate Herberger, long distance swimmer, who thanked the Mayor, for his support. At the meeting, the athlete said that she was grateful to the Municipal Government, that with their support, her swim of 109 kilometers around the island to raise awareness of the importance of the conservation of marine ecosystems was a success. During her swim, she said that she found beautiful Marine Life and stated there is an invaluable natural wealth to protect here in Cozumel. Meanwhile, Fredy Marrufo Martin , expressed support for all actions that are carried out for conservation by citizens, civil organizations and all those who by their actions work towards protecting the environment.
If you recall, Renate Herberger ended her swim on Wednesday 21 February. She had swam a distance of approximately 109 kilometers around the island in eight days, swimming eight hours daily. In addition, she lectured 500 students on the importance of the conservation of marine ecosystems with the support of the Municipal Government of Cozumel, Comisión Nacional de Áreas Naturales Protegidas (Conanp).
Cozumel Committee on Forest Fire Fighting
COZUMEL, 23 February: In order to preserve the ecosystem, natural resources and protect the general population, Mayor Fredy Marrufo Martín led the installation of “Comité Operativo Especializado en Incendios Forestales Temporada 2015”(Operating Committee Specializing on Forest Fire Season 2015). The Operating Committee on Wildfire Season 2015 is headed by Mayor Fredy Marrufo Martín.
In the formal ceremony, Mayor thanked the federal, state, municipal, public sector and the private sector for their support. Cozumel became the first municipality in Quintana Roo with this committee that will work on the prevention, detection and combat forest fires. He stated, “This season we must commit to contribute to various actions in this matter, because the three levels of government have a task to perform but responsible citizenship is critical since many forest fires are man-caused.”
Luis Carlos Rodríguez Hoy, Director General of the Coordination of Civil Protection of the State of Quintana Roo emphasized that the most important thing is prevention. “99 percent of the fires that have occurred have been by the hand of man, either intentionally or by accident, so we have to pay close attention.” He congratulated Cozumel authorities as in the last six years Cozumel has not recorded any wildfire.
After having installed the Committee for Prevention Wildfires, Lucio Canul Andrade, Director of Civil Protection, Fire and Lifeguard Cozumel, explained that the installation is carried out in compliance with the Rules of Civil Protection of the Municipality of Cozumel. Canul Andrade explained that in Cozumel, you have an area just over 48 thousand hectares of vegetation that is mostly tropical forest, which must be preserved.
