Cozumel News March 30th, 2015

This Edition is all about the ferries! Here is the latest news about a ferry from Merida to New Orleans, a ferry from Florida to Cuba, from Florida to somewhere in the Yucatan Peninsula, and  our local ferries to and from Playa del Carmen from Cozumel, Barcos Caribe, Mexico Waterjets, Ultramar, and the Vehicle Ferry, Transcaribe. All this information will be kept for you in Cozumel Sun Living in Cozumel Guide under Cozumel Ferries.

There are talks about a Ferry from sister Cities Mérida , Mexico and New Orleans, U.S.A.  Here is What Yucatan Expat Life reported:

Ferry to New Orleans in talks

YUCATÁN EXPAT LIFE / MARCH 27, 2015

Mérida, Yucatán — While private-sector companies for years have proposed ferry service to and from the United States, now the state government is getting into the game.

A boat connecting Yucatán with Mérida’s sister city of New Orleans would boost tourism and attract potential second-home buyers, said Eric Rubio Barthell, head of the Office of the State Executive.

He revealed that government officials are in talks with a U.S. company that navigates the Mississippi River to the Great Lakes region.

He noted, speaking to Diario de Yucatán, the encouraging fact that many tourists now come to Yucatán for longer visits, and noted that New Orleans is a strategic location for a large number of Americans.

In late April, a group of 40 business executives from Louisiana and Mississippi will meet with local government officials.

A ferry has been tried before. The “Yucatan Express,” connected Progreso with Tampa in 2003. It was a a 36-hour ride each way on a vessel that was smaller and more modest than a cruise ship, reported the St. Petersburg Times. As few as 37 passengers occupied the ferry’s 322 cabins on an early cruise and the venture lost millions of dollars.

Orlando-based United Caribbean Lines has repeatedly expressed interest in a Florida-Yucatán ferry and as recently as 2012 sent out questionnaires to potential customers. As of today, their home page indicates plans to sail to Cuba this fall.

yucatan-ferry-120x80Yucatan Ferry Update

I received this email update on the Yucatan Ferry Project that we have been following for a few years:

I am happy to report that things are going ahead with both the Florida ferry to Cuba and the Yucatan/US ferry service. (Not related to news reports of a Yucatan New Orleans ferry)

The website is now up and operational.  You may go to the site to sign up for the email list.  Bruce has always said the website would not be operational until he is certain the ferries would go ahead so this is good news.  http://www.unitedcaribbeanlines.com/.

Bruce said, “I have had very productive meetings this week in putting the final plans together for the ferry. I hope that we will have something material to announce in the next few weeks.

I have also been working on getting a license to run a ferry from Florida to Cuba.

If I get that license, we will also run a survey from Cancun to Havana. It would be fun for all the gringos in the Yucatan for a great getaway to Cuba without flying.”

You may forward this email to anyone interested in either ferry route.
