Cozumel News May 11th, 2015 is all about our first ever-High diving competition held on the island of Cozumel. The Second World Cup FINA High Diving 2015 took place the 8th, 9th, and 10th and we have pictures, recap, and final scores of the competition. It was fun family entertainment (not to mention free) enjoyed by many this weekend. There was little else to report on this Mother’s Day weekend, except for the high waves on the other side of the island. As beautiful as they were, I was shocked to see people actually getting in the water. The red flags were up people, the waves and current are dangerous! The Cozumel Women’s Breakfast Group has a summer schedule and last, but not least; the Cozumel Airplane Library is celebrating a one-year anniversary and the Cozumel Calendar of Events for May 2015.
The Second World Cup FINA High Diving 2015, was held in Cozumel this weekend. Colombian Orlando Duque defended his 2014 title and took the Gold Medal with points totaling 565.80; The Silver Medal went to Russian Artem Silchenko, with 559.55 points and the Bronze Medal to Steve Lobue of the United States with 553.80 points. The event, unprecedented in Mexico, brought together 33 divers from 15 countries.
Mexican Jonathan Paredes, was a Bronze medalist at the FINA world of Barcelona 2013. In this weekend’s competition, Paredes finished in fifth place. In the five rounds from a 27-meter platform, he scored 551.45 points. Supported throughout by the audience at the pier of the Caletita Lighthouse in Cozumel, after holding first place, lost his chance to win on the last dive. He received grades 7 and 7.5 on the implementation of a dive with a 5.1 degree of difficulty, giving him a low score of 107.10 for the round.
His opponents’ last dive had better executions and higher degrees of difficulty, knocking him to fifth place, 2.35 points less than the winner of the Bronze. Other Mexicans in the competition were Jorge Ferzuli, ninth with 496.80 points and Sergio Guzmán in tenth with 478.75.
Colombian Orlando Duque, about to turn 41, on his last dive rose from third place to first place to defend his title as champion of the World Cup of Kazan 2014. His dive with a 5.6 degree of difficulty, received grades 8 and 8.5, for a round score 142.80 points, enough to wangle the Gold Medal.
Russian Artem Silchenko, who was always among the top three positions during the competition, followed Duque and won the Silver. The Bronze went to Steve Lobue, who nailed a dive with a surprising 6.1-degree of difficulty, and a score of 8.5. This was the best dive of the fifth round, which earned him an addition of 155.55 points to his final score.
The second part of the men’s final, which included rounds four and five, brought together 21 divers, and defined who among those participants will compete in the FINA Swimming World Championships in Kazan.
JONATHAN WALLS (MEXICO, fifth)
“I’m happy for the support I had in Cozumel, my legs did not respond to the last dive, and I had to return to think about what I had to do. I am happy for these three people because they are the best and Orlando once again shows that he is the person who has to win, I do not know what he does, but he always wins these events. Expectations for the FINA World Championships in Kazan are the best, and I want to increase the degree of difficulty because we saw that an error like this not only took me from the podium but I dropped to fifth place.”
ORLANDO DUQUE (COLOMBIA, GOLD MEDAL)
“I’m happy with the result, more after being with that pressure, even from my own country to win once again; you know you have that white mark on your back and other divers who want that job. and more personally because I want to jump well, I want to make sure that I could repeat the win, try to use that pressure and use it as best I can, I was very stressed, I was shaking up there, but I managed to calm down and used that pressure to concentrate and make dives of high quality.
The competition was very tough, I was in third place on the first day, and then had to put more energy and more quality to my dives this day, that was my strategy and it worked. I think many of my peers’ pressure affected them; you have to work at it.
Cozumel is spectacular, the water is spectacular where we are standing up there, it looks great under water, you open your eyes and it is a beauty, I have been too busy in training to enjoy the island, but what we have enjoyed, is perfect for our Sport. There are all the conditions, weather, wind, the water temperature, invites you to jump; here it is very relaxed, very calm.
We are just starting the season, we have competition next week in France, the idea is to improve with the result here in Cozumel, and I know I can improve even though the most important goal of the year is the FINA World Championships in Kazan.
That High Diving was included in the program of water sports was a dream and it happened in Barcelona, now we are going to Kazan to the second World Championships; to be here in Cozumel beforehand, not even dreamed of! Our sport has grown tremendously in terms of quality, we are doing dives of greater difficulty, but it is a very safe sport. There are certain incidents but that is what happens in these sports and at this level, I think we have a very good chance to be nominated to be in the Olympic Games.
We have the support of many federations, the media, the sport is spectacular and that can help the OIC decide if the sport can be include, it is the dream of many, it would be very interesting to be the pioneers of bringing a new sport to the Olympic Games.”
