Cozumel Let Them Cross Project

There is a new program called “Ecologia de Carretera” dedicated to encouraging drivers to be drive cautiously to avoid killing or injuring Cozumel’s precious wildlife.  Their Facebook page located at: https://www.facebook.com/Ecologiadecarreteras reads:

“Página para promover a Ecología de carreteras en su proyecto de Campaña y Monitoreo de Fauna atropellada.
Déjalos Cruzar: campaña para reducir el atropellamiento de Fauna.
¡Únete! Ayúdanos ya sea PATROCINANDO, INTEGRÁNDOTE Y DIFUNDE”

My translation:

“This Page is to promote Road Ecology with a project to campaign against the running over of wildlife and the Monitoring of wildlife injured and/or killed by drivers.
Let Them Cross: A campaign to reduce the running over of Fauna.
Join up! Help us by SPONSORING, JOINING, AND PARTICIPATING.”

Please be careful when driving and alert your visitors to the importance of driving cautiously to allow our precious, many times endangered creatures to cross Cozumel’s roads safely.

Cozumel Motor Vehicle Plate Information

A reader requested that I posted the new location for motor vehicle transactions.  Thank heavens she did as I have discovered that somehow I have lost all the information pertaining to license plates and vehicle registration. As I reported last month, the new vehicle plates are ready for pick up at the new building on Avenida Zamma and Calle 80. From Calle 65, turn on Avenida Zamma towards the Bicentenario Park (by the big wood ship).

On your right as you pass the Parque Bicentenario, you will see an OXXO on the corner, next to that Cozumel Cable Company, a Parking lot, and the very next building is where you purchase and pick up vehicle plates. The building has no name. Today, there was a notice posted declaring the office closed for the holiday. The heading was from “Secretaria de Finanzas y Planeacion” (SEP) (Department Name and the Office name is  “La Recaudadora De Rentas De Cozumel.”

There have been long lines as pictured, for those that have not yet paid for the new plates. It is my understanding that if you paid for your plates as you should have, earlier this year, there is a separate line with very little wait.

I have purchased a second hand vehicle and will be getting the new plates and going through the entire process the first of May. At that time, I will add the description of the entire process to the Cozumel Guide Section of The Cozumel Sun.

Happy Easter Everyone!

If you are on the island this holiday season, remember that the car ferry has a special for locals and residents of one car plus 5 passengers for only $400 pesos!

Mexico takes Holy Week Serious, so there will not be any public offices open, check with you water delivery person so that you will not be left short handed.

Upon my return I will be providing readers with the highlights of the Town Hall Meetings that are once again taking place on a regular basis.

Worship Services are again listed in this issue and under the business Directory at all times. I have the hours for worship services at Corpus Christi, contact me if you are interested.  One of my favorite things during this time of year are the processions on Palm Sunday and the re-enactments of the crusifiction and resurrection put on by many churches on the island.  I just posted a video on our Facebook pages of one of them. I will leave it pinned to the top of the page for a few days.

Traveling for 10 Days

I will be traveling to take care of some family obligations within the next forty eight hours. Please excuse the irregular schedule of the news this month. I am swamped preparing personal taxes for both countries as well as The Cozumel Sun and Papeleria Mama Lilly. To add further stress to the situation, I just discovered that  there will be no internet access outside of my telephone service. I will keep you updated on the latest Cozumel news and information via our Facebook pages:

The Sun Garage Sale

The next Garage Sale will  be the first weekend in May! Plenty of time for you to gather all the things that you no longer use! The Sun Garage Sale, formerly known as “The On-Going Garage Sale” was started as a means to collect gently used clothing and goods to be donated to the poor and/or sold at low cost to raise funds for our many projects in Las Fincas and our immediate neighborhood.

We have donated or sold the majority of the second hand clothing and articles we collected in 2016. Our garage sales will resume again next month, and need your donations. Please consider dropping off the items you no longer use or need at our home/store #1081 35 Avenida between Calles 17 & 15 Bis. You can also call at 987-118-4453 or 987-120-5902 to arrange a pick up at your home. All Clothing, Housewares, Furniture, Appliances, etc. will be greatly appreciated. Your donations or proceeds from your donations are guaranteed to go towards a family in need or to a good cause. A special Thank you to Denise McMillon and Family.

More Pier Action in the Cozumel Malecon

When you are out and about downtown, note the crew that is working to the left side of this view breaking up cement underwater and throwing it to the side. There are men operating noisy equipment, a suction hose is in the water, there are all sorts of floating tube about, and a diver can be seen coming up and communicating with the ground crew.

Charlie and I could not pass up the opportunity to ask a resting employee to give us the scoop.  Here is what we discovered: They are rebuilding a pier that was destroyed by Wilma. The owner of Ultramar is footing the bill to rebuild his own pier and terminal, as it is getting crowded in the passenger terminal with three Companies working out of the existing pier. We discussed how much sturdier this pier will be compared to the current terminal that we doubt will survive a future hurricane. We also discussed that the new pier will be of an efficient design, unlike the wasted space on the second floor at the terminal.

When I asked if this might not be a future parking spot for the controversial Ultramar Water Taxis, he got a big grin on his face and said that is yet to be approved.

Cozumel Ladies Breakfast

April 12, 19, and 26 the Cozumel Ladies Breakfast will be held at La Catrina on Calle 11 between Avenues 20 and 25. There is a small parking lot in the back plus parking on both sides of the street.

Our group meets every Wednesday. In addition to meeting wonderful Ladies from all over the world, the breakfast club is an excellent source of information gathering and networking. Breakfasts are informative and FUN! All Women are welcome to join us, even if you are just visiting our beautiful Island.
If you wish to be placed on the mailing list, contact: Betty Li at cozumel.ladies.breakfast@gmail.com.  https://www.facebook.com/lacatrinacozumel/.

The Cozumel Men’s Breakfast Club

We have re-instituted the ancient and revered tradition of “Men’s Breakfast”. At last, a vehicle for the passage of knowledge, wisdom and the Cozumel way. If you have some knowledge of “how things work” on the island, you should come. If you do not, you really should come.
Breakfast is every Friday at 8:00 a.m. at “Fogo do Brasil”, the Brazilian restaurant on the second floor. Fogo is located on Melgar Avenida just south of Calle 5. This is where the McDonalds used to be.If you have problems with the escalator, the staff will stop it for you so you may get on and off and reverse directions when you depart.

Fogo Do Brasil has a parking lot free – Park in the lot on Calle 5 between Rafael E. Melgar and 5 Av (alongside the Hyperbaric Chamber).  Present your ticket to your server at Fogo do Brasil and your parking is free of charge.
