Sporting Events to Stay in Cozumel

One of the most frightening predictions that came with the new Municipal Government’s inherited debt was that we would not be holding some sporting events that bring the local economy a much needed boost. It was announced earlier this week that after negotiations an agreement has been reached to continue to hold three major sporting events in Cozumel.

A contract has been signed to hold Cozumel Ironman 70.3, Cozumel World Triathlon (ITU), and Cozumel Ironman for 4 more years. The promoters of these events (Asdesporte) had threatened to pull out due to non-payment of fees by the Municipality for the past two and one half years. The fees in arrears total some forty-six million pesos for the past six events. The negotiations reached an acceptable payment plan for the past debt as well as a 30% reduction in the future fees charged to the Municipality.

Cozumel Ironman 70.3 2017 will be held on September 24^th, Cozumel Triathlon (ITU) will be held September 30^th – October 3^rd, and Cozumel Ironman 2017 will be held on November 26^th.

Readers I am so very sorry for the delay in publications. My family has been assaulted with one illness and crisis after another that has prevented me from posting the news as usual. Rather than to wait as I have been doing until things calm down, I am just going to post a little at a time. Today’s news was started the first of this month! I attended a town hall meeting full of good information. I will work on those notes next. Please bear with me until things get back to normal, probably in September as the family summer road trip is just around the corner!  This is a great time for anyone that wants to contribute an article or two to jump in!

Cozumel Ladies Breakfast

Time for a change of location and since it is summer and low season for the cruise ships…. we are going to repeat our favorite summer place like last year the Sky Reef Beach Club every Wedsnesday morning at nine fifteen – nine thirty  thirty until further notice.

We will drop our snorkeling gear on some tables & lounge chairs and then enjoy breakfast (yes they serve breakfast) up in the restaurant area.  Then after a bit of relaxing and before the Carnival boat people show up, we will head to the water to snorkel and/or swim.  Bring your gear and your float toys!!!

Now I know this is south of town and not walkable but Debbie Haehn has graciously agreed to drive anyone who needs a ride.  Pick-up time is 9 am sharp on Calle Xel-Ha right at the crosswalk going into Chedraui where the Colectivo vans stop.  She drives a red/burgundy van.

The Cozumel Sun Garage Sale

We have had really low attendance at the last few sales, the heat is affecting everyone I think. We will try again with better advertising in a few weeks. The Sun Garage Sale, formerly known as “The On-Going Garage Sale” was started as a means to collect gently used clothing and goods to be donated to the poor and/or sold at low cost to raise funds for our many projects in Las Fincas and our immediateneighborhood.

Please consider dropping off the items you no longer use or need at our home/store #1081 35 Avenida between Calles 17 & 15 Bis. You can also call at 987-118-4453 or 987-120-5902 to arrange a pick up at your home. All Clothing, Housewares, Furniture, Appliances, etc. will be greatly appreciated. Your donations or proceeds from your donations are guaranteed to go towards a family in need or to a good cause.  Thank you wonderful couple that dropped off the five bags! We purchased $2,000 in food and supplies!
