The Cozumel Sun News November 25, 2017

In this edition of The Cozumel Sun, Mexico’s Minimum Wage increasing December 1, the Cozumel Calendar of Events for this week and December 2017.  A very important update of fundraising efforts for Brandon’s eye surgery and other Holiday and on going community projects!

Mexico Minimum Wage to Increase December 1

Mexican government and business leaders agreed on Tuesday to raise the country’s minimum wage starting on December 1 to 88.36 pesos from 80.04 pesos. The 10% raise affects 24.7 million Mexicans who work either one or two minimum wage jobs. This is an increase equivalent to $4.25 to $ 4.70 U.S. per day.

Rising prices have weakened Mexicans’ purchasing power for nearly two years, the Mexican peso has hovered around its all-time low, roughly worth five cents. Seen the other way, one dollar has been worth between 18 and 22 pesos since early 2016.

This increase does nothing to help the average Mexican family. One meal a day will cost 80 pesos.  They must work multiple jobs in order to survive. Everyone living here and visiting here should do what they can to help these beautiful people.

See Cozumel News November 22 for full Details:

Brandon’s Eye Surgery: The Cozumel Sun’s goal is $11,000 pesos by November 28th.  Thank you Ines from Buccanos, Patrons of Alma’s Only and Laura Wilkinson, we are at $3,800! $7,200 pesos to go! Because of the deadline I will borrow the balance needed.

Christmas Toy Drive: Five Families nine children need Cash Donations, as I purchased gifts during Buen Fin Sale.

Fireman’s Family:  A neighbor is a Cozumel Fireman. As you know, they hardly make any money to start with, now with time spent at hospitals with his wife, the family is really in a bad financial situation. His wife is at home in hospice care, there is nothing more that Doctors can do. The two children are included in my toy drive (girls ages 4 years and 14 years), Grandma lives with them. I need a food basket for family of five.

Fincas Family: Material for Roofing and Flooring, Food Basket for Family of Four need cash or materials/food stuff.

Sun Garage Sale: Now collecting for after the Holidays Distribution and Sales: Please keep donating the items you do not need, drop it off anytime day or night, or call and we will pick up!

Welcome to the Cozumel Sun! Since 2006, TCS website, Facebook Group, and Facebook page has provided the latest news and information from Cozumel, Mexico. There are no paid staff. TCS is non-profit and non-government funded. Donations help pay for website expenses, taxes, and fees. Donations support our community assistance program. TCS Community Assistance TCS provides assistance to local individuals and families with emergency food, medical expenses and medication. We help with school related expenses for children in the immediate neighborhood (Colonia Independencia). We have a ""drop in" meal policy, we feed the hungry no questions asked. In addition we publish articles that feature community programs in need of donations and volunteers. We encourage both residents and visitors to give back to this island paradise by volunteering and donating to these existing community programs. TCS has successful matched those that want to help and those in need for many years. During the Pandemic, our resources go to the Community Kitchens that are feeding hundreds in Cozumel.
