State of Q. Roo Announces Major Anti-Crime Operation

As you recall, we were outraged last year when a travel warning was issued for our state, Quintana Roo. It was explained that travel warnings are issued by state and as a result of the violence in Playa del Carmen and Cancun, we were included. On February 1, 2018 Governor Carlos Joaquin announced that a major operation will be launched to consolidate security and prevent the reactivation of a warning in the future against tourist destinations in Quintana Roo.

The measure will be in coordination with the Federal Ministry of the Interior, and will consist of the deployment of military personnel that not only will fight against crime, but will also perform intelligence tasks. The government seeks to locate criminal objectives and combat them.  The governor did not give information on when the troops and intelligence agents would arrive but they would be deployed, mainly in Cancun and the Riviera Maya.

COZUMEL, February 1.- The European Union chose five protected natural areas among 14 thousand that exist in the Atlantic basin, to participate in a meeting of experiences to be held in Brussels, capital of Belgium. Cozumel is one of the five protected natural areas chosen to share the good practices that are applied in the “Arrecifes de Cozumel” National Park that have been fundamental in protecting the Mesoamerican Reef System.

National Geographic Filmed in Cozumel Punta Sur

Punta Sur Eco-Touristic Park was the setting for the recording of the episode “The Great Mayan Route” of the TV series “Mysteries of the Underworld” of  the National Geographic Channel.

The production team chose the Punta Sur Ecological Park, and in particular the Museum of Navigation, as a strategic site for the first program under the guidance of the scientist Andrés Ruzo and the archaeologist Fabio Amador. The program will introduce viewers to the world of navigation among the pre-Hispanic Mayans through the collection of the Museum of Navigation. The Museum is located in the base (house of the keeper) of Punta Celarain Lighthouse.

Within the framework of the “Celebration of 500 years: Meeting between two cultures.” is the 500th anniversary of the sighting of Cozumel by the Europeans and the first Catholic Mass.  National Geographic dedicates the program to emphasize the importance of navigation among the Mayas in the commercial and cultural sphere.
