Getting Your Affairs in Order
People have a tendency to retire or move to Cozumel and get carried away enjoying the life that paradise has to offer. We forget that injury or illness can strike at any time, and are unprepared. Here are Six tips that will help you get your affairs in order.
1. Last Will and Testament
September is Patriot Month in Mexico, Independence Day is September the 15th. September is referred to as Will Month. The Mexican Federal Government does not charge filing fees, to make filing a Will accessible to everyone. If money is an issue, September is the month to file. The Will that you filed back in your native country is not valid in Mexico. A Will must be filed in Mexico for your assets located here.
A “Notario Publico” is the official in Mexico that you contact to file a will. There is a list available of Attorneys and Notarios in the Cozumel Sun’s Business Directory. As in any Will, be prepared with a list of all your assets.
Buccanos at Night will be closed from September the 17th to November the 1st.
Thank you for another great Season!
We love what we do. Love the taste……Taste the love.
2. Mexico Funeral Arrangements
What happens if you die in Cozumel? Have you taken steps to ensure your funeral expenses are paid for and your wishes known? In the Cozumel Sun’s business Directory, I list Funeral Homes and Cemeteries. Do not place your family in the difficult situation of making these decisions in the in the event of your death!
3. Emergency Contact Card
In the event of your death a Will makes things easier for your loved ones and ensures that your assets are distributed per your instructions. An Emergency Contact card has the information needed if you become ill and incapacitated, that affects the quality of the rest of your life. The Cozumel Sun’s Guide for Residents has an entire section dedicated to The Emergency Contact Card.
4. Safe Guarding Important Documents
Every official document is important in Mexico. It is imperative that you keep all your documents and documentation organized and current. It is a good practice to have a copy of everything. I carry copies of my documents and leave the originals at home in the safe. The Cozumel Sun’s Guide for Residents has an entire section dedicated to Safeguarding Important Documents.
5. Preparing for Hurricanes and Tropical Storms
It is very important to have a checklist of things to prepare in the event of a hurricane or a tropical storm in Cozumel. A tropical storm can change into a hurricane quickly. If you have not already done this, I urge you to immediately read and follow the instructions in The Cozumel Sun’s Guide for Residents section on Hurricane Preparation.

6. Neighborhood Watch Group
99.9% of Cozumel locals are wonderful people that will watch your back and go out of their way to help you. Sadly, home robberies and petty crime have been on the rise. We have a juvenile delinquency problem, and there is no controlling who is coming from the mainland. Thankfully Cozumel is safe from the more serious crimes that plague many cities.
Use common sense in everything that you do, don’t get intoxicated if you are out and about alone. Do not go out alone late at night. I suggest that you visit the Cozumel Humane Society and adopt a dog if you do not already have one at home for your home security.
I believe it is very important to join your neighborhood watch group. The Cozumel neighborhood Crime watches have had great success. Neighbors are cooperating in watching out for each other’s property and reporting suspicious activities. This has resulted in prevention of theft and some arrests.
Mexico unveils new $500 Peso Bill

Remember that we have Gift Cards of $50, $100, and $200 pesos that can be used for school or business supplies, computer time, copying, printing, binding, laminating, gifts, arts, and crafts, even Avon!. They are the perfect gift for a school age child anytime of the year. In Cozumel, each child receives a list of supplies. This list varies by grade, by teacher, and by school. They specify which brand of notebook, what style, and what color they want for each topic. The same goes for paints, pencils, pens. etc. as the school year progresses, new projects and assignments require more supplies.
We collect items for Distribution and Sales. Please keep donating the items you do not need, drop them off anytime day or night, or call and we will pick up! We are currently displaying the garage sale items in the Papeleria store and items are available to clientele daily. Proceeds help keep our community assistance projects going.

VOTING IN 2018 U.S. ELECTIONS
Overseas voting info from the US Consulate
Your Vote Counts! Did you know that many U.S. elections for House and Senate seats have been decided by a margin smaller than the number of ballots cast by absentee voters? All states are required to count every absentee ballot as long as it is valid and reaches local election officials by the absentee ballot receipt deadline.
Follow a few simple steps to make sure that you can vote in the 2018 U.S. elections:
-
Request Your Ballot:
Complete a new Federal Post Card Application (FPCA). You must complete a new FPCA after January 1, 2018 to ensure you receive your ballot for the 2018 elections. The completion of the FPCA allows you to request absentee ballots for all elections for federal offices (President, U.S. Senate, and U.S. House of Representatives) including primaries and special elections during the calendar year in which it is submitted. The FPCA is accepted by all local election officials in all U.S. states and territories.
You can complete the FPCA online at www.FVAP.gov. The online voting assistant will ask you questions specific to your state. We encourage you to ask your local election officials to deliver your blank ballots to you electronically (by email, internet download, or fax, depending on your state). Include your email address on your FPCA to take advantage of the electronic ballot delivery option. Return the FPCA per the instructions on the website. FVAP.gov will tell you if your state allows the FPCA to be returned electronically or if you must submit a paper copy with original signature. If you must return a paper version, please see below for mailing options.
-
Receive and Complete Your Ballot:
States are required to send out ballots 45 days before a regular election for federal office and states generally send out ballots at least 30 days before primary elections. For most states, you can confirm your registration and ballot delivery online.
-
Return Your Completed Ballot:
Some states allow you to return your completed ballot by email or fax. If your state requires you to return paper voting forms or ballots to local election officials, you can use international mail, a courier service such as FedEx or DHL, or you may also drop off completed voting materials during regular business hours at the U.S. Consulate General in Merida. Place your materials in a postage paid return envelope (available under “Downloadable Election Materials” on the FVAP homepage) or in an envelope bearing sufficient domestic U.S. postage, and address it to the relevant local election officials.
-
New this year:
email to fax service by FVAP! – the Federal Voting Assistance Program (FVAP) will provide an email-to-fax conversion service for voters who have difficulty sending election materials to States that do not accept emailed documents. Get more information here.
Researching the Candidates and Issues: Online Resources. Check out the FVAP links page for helpful resources that will aid your research of candidates and issues. Non-partisan information about candidates, their voting records, and their positions on issues are widely available and easy to obtain online. You can also read national and hometown newspapers online, or search the internet to locate articles and information.
For information about election dates and deadlines, subscribe to FVAP’s Voting Alerts (vote@fvap.gov). FVAP also shares Voting Alerts via Facebook and Twitter. Learn more at the Federal Voting Assistance Program’s (FVAP) website, FVAP.gov. If you have any questions about registering to vote overseas, please contact U.S. Consulate General Merida’s Voting Assistance Officer at AskMeridaACS@state.gov.
