A New Administration in Cozumel

The elected Municipal President is in the office he will occupy for the next three years. President Perla Tun Pech physically handed the office to President-elect Pedro Joaquín Delbouis, ahead of schedule.  Pedro Joaquín Delbouis noted that the transition took place under a framework of cooperation.  There were no altercations, as the members of the incoming group feared. Everything happened in a calm climate, Joaquín Delbouis admitted. The new Municipal President vowed to work with the outgoing Municipal President for the general benefit of Cozumel at future town hall meetings. Cozumel Fiestas De San Miguel Arcángel

Annually Cozumel Catholics celebrate the island’s patron Saint from September 20 – 29.  This year 2,500 Catholics participated in the festivities. The many activities celebrating this event begin with daily processions from the Church of San Miguel (after Mass) with many locals wearing traditional costumes.  These processions are filled with dancing and traditions that include nightly fireworks.

Church of San Miguel Arcángel

Yesterday a procession of local fishermen carried an image of San Miguel Arcángel through town to the downtown pier where they boarded a ferry that surrounded by local fishing boats. The ceremony at sea involves flowers thrown into the waters. The Pilgrimages involve devotees of different ages.  Older participants take part in the processions to promote and entrench traditions for future generations.

After this ceremony, a procession of 1,500 people together with seven priests from the different Catholic churches of the island traveled to San Miguel Arcángel Church. The statue of the Saint is placed back to its permanent home inside the church. Hundreds of people pray and make requests to this patron Saint of the Cozumeleños. Bishop Pedro Pablo Elizondo Cárdenas, of the “Prelature of Cancún-Chetumal”, performed the Eucharistic Celebration.

Aurita’s Cozumel Corner

September was a devastating month for the Cozumel economy. Those of us that are retired in Cozumel have always heard of the “low season.” These are the summer months that tourism is at the lowest point.

The Low Season

The people of Cozumel survive 100% on tourism. There is no manufacturing, farming, or any other industry here on the island. The majority of the population work in the tourism trade, the smaller percentage have small businesses that serve the tourism employees.  When they have no or low wages and tips, it affects the entire island. Please keep this in mind when you patronize business and tip. We found ourselves really spread thin for food money for the many people we help feed on a daily basis. In addition to our own funds, we make ends meet through the Papeleria and garage sale. The Mini Super is still in the red due to the low season and startup costs. Please help by patronizing the stores and donating to the garage sale.

The Garage Sale

We collect items for Distribution and Sales. Please keep donating the items you do not need, drop them off anytime day or night, or call and we will pick up! We are currently displaying the garage sale items in the Papeleria store and items are available to clientele daily. Proceeds help keep our community assistance projects going.

Update:

Some good news, after almost a year of waiting and many cancellations, my son Bartolo had his third and final operation on his arm. His shattered wrist has recovered. Unfortunately, his elbow is beyond repair. The doctors have fixed his arm in a permanent position that will enable him to use the arm, but not bend it. We are grateful that the end is near for the pain he has been suffering all this time.

Please excuse the lapse in The Cozumel Sun editions, I am working seven days per week between the two community stores. Have a great week!
