The Cozumel Sun News introduces the Public Safety Program, Vive Seguro Quintana Roo. There is much to catch up on, but it is imperative that I get the information out on the neighborhood watch groups to be supported by the new State Program.
Cozumel Neighborhood Watch Groups
Background
The previous administration in Cozumel under the leadership of Perla Tun, encourage the citizens of Cozumel to work together to keep neighborhoods clean and watch over each other’s property. Neighborhood Watch Groups were formed to combat the ever increasing petty crime in the colonies.
The lack of adequate police presence set the island on an unprecedented increase in crimes such as muggings, assaults, burglaries, as well as car and vehicle thefts. For whatever reason, the neighborhood watch groups were not taken seriously by the new administration. As a matter of fact, the opposite took place and police response left much to be desired.
Enters the State
The State of Quintana Roo (our state), announced that they have a new program called VIVE SEGURO QUINTANA ROO. The person in charge of this program at the state level is Rodrigo Armando Aranda Castañeda (987-115-3761). Among the great plan to combat crime is organizing the neighbors to work with each other and the police. In other words, Neighborhood Watch Groups!
What this entails
The State has set aside funds to support the groups by providing 24-hour staff for assistance.
Fund Alarms placed at 80 meter intervals, with four clickers to each group free of charge, additional clickers at a reasonable cost.
Funds to meet the demands of the community; street lighting, signals, placement of topes, anything that will aid to provide public safety.
Promote Awareness of public safety by providing information to students in schools and other neighborhood organizations.
Take Action Now
If you have an existing Neighborhood Watch Group, register it with Comandante Luis Pablo Garcia. WhatsApp 52-987-112-9286. He will provide you with the enrollment form.
The form is a legal document (Acta de Registro) that is to be completed with member information and signatures. The requirement is a minimum of five members including a designated President and Secretary.
If you do not have a group, I encourage you to get together with your immediate neighbors and form one.
The alarms that will be distributed to groups have an 80-meter range, so larger groups should break into smaller groups.
More Information
I will provide more thorough information as I receive it. Other sources of information are WhatsApp group V V Representantes and Nemesio our priceless neighborhood leader 52-987-115-3761.
Cozumel Presidential Compound to be Sold
MEXICO CITY (APR) – In the news this week the owner of the Administration and Disposal of Goods Service (SAE), Ricardo Rodríguez, announced that two presidential mansions, located in Acapulco and Cozumel, will soon be auctioned.
Presidential Action
Upon being elected to office, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, announced that he planned to dispose of all luxury items purchase by previous presidents. He immediately placed the Presidential plane for sale, and started flying commercial airlines. He refused to move into the Presidential Palace, Los Pinos. He instead opened the residence to the public on his first day in office and turned it into a Museum that could be enjoyed by all.
Past Presidents
For decades, the presidents of Mexico and their families enjoyed at least five properties, ranches and summer mansions in tourist destinations. Public funds paid for the year around maintenance and personnel to maintain these properties. The president has renounced those luxuries and plans that proceeds from their sale will go to roads, bridges, schools and hospitals. The auctions are to be carried out within a month.
According to inventories of the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena), the properties to be auctioned are Quinta “Guerrero”, in Acapulco and the “Quinta Maya”, in Cozumel.
The Cozumel property is the large compound right across from the military base and the fighter planes displayed adjacent to the airport.
There are other properties
The two announced mansions are not the only ones. The Army owns Quinta Allende, in San Miguel de Allende Guanajuato, also in presidential service. There is another presidential estate in the coastal Miguel Aleman, also in Acapulco, Guerrero, which is owned by the Secretariat of the Navy (SEMAR). There is a fifth mansion described as equivalent to US’s Camp David, but it is on loan to the Presidency by a former President for the purpose of entertaining foreign dignitaries.
