Vive Seguro Quintana Roo Program

Take Action Now!

It is not too late to enroll in this program that will make your neighborhood watch group, legal, give you a direct line to the police department, and provide funding for alarms, topes, street lighting, and more!

The alarms that will be distributed to groups have an 80-meter range, so larger groups should break into smaller groups. If you do not have a group, I encourage you to get together with your immediate neighbors and form one. Register your neighborhood watch group with Comandante Luis Pablo Garcia. WhatsApp 52-987-112-9286. He will provide you with the enrollment form.

The form is a legal document (Acta de Registro) that is to be completed with member information and signatures. The requirement is a minimum of five members including a designated President and Secretary.

More Information

Registrations for the first 19 groups enrolled have been forwarded to the state. I will provide more thorough information as I receive it. Other sources of information are WhatsApp group VV Representantes and Nemesio our priceless neighborhood leader 52-987-115-3761.

Preparation for Hurricane & Tropical Storm Season in Cozumel

June marks the official start of hurricane season. Every year at this time, we encourage readers living on the island to carefully review what needs to be done to prepare for a hurricane.

There are many things that you can do now to prepare. Now is the time to purchase a waterproof safe, precut wood or storm shutters for your windows, generators, anything that you might need in advance of an emergency.  Remember, these items might not be available during a hurricane watch. Everything that you can do to prepare now is in BOLD print.

The Storm Check List

-Cover all of your home’s windows with pre-cut plywood or hurricane shutters to protect your windows from high winds. NOW is the time to inspect the wood you may have stored, or make certain the keys are handy for the storm shutters and they are operational!

-Bring in all outdoor furniture, potted plants, decorations, and garbage cans, anything that is not a permanent fixture.

-Turn off all power breakers, turn off and disconnect all gas tanks, and check for gas leaks.

-Install a generator for emergencies. If you do not have a generator and must keep Insulin or other medication refrigerated. NOW is the time to arrange to store your insulin with someone that has a generator.

Keep all trees and shrubs well-trimmed so they are more wind resistant. Reinforce your garage doors; if wind enters a garage, it can cause dangerous and expensive structural damage. Reinforce your gates.

-Secure your home by closing shutters, and securing outdoor objects or again, bringing them inside.

-Ensure that you have a supply of water for sanitary purposes such as cleaning and flushing toilets. Fill large containers with water, and the bathtub if you have one. Have large containers on hand.

You should have a first aid kit. Do not forget a battery operated radio with new batteries, lanterns or flashlights, cellular telephone, blankets, bedspreads, candles, and matches.

-Protect your documents, money, and personal belongings. You should have a place that these items that is water and fireproof safe.

-You should have a supply of non- perishable food on hand (canned, bottled, and/or boxed) and bottled water that can last you for 3 to 4 days.

-Store food on shelves safely out of the way of contaminated water in the event of flooding.  Have bottled water stored where it will be as safe as possible from flooding.

-Turn the refrigerator thermostat to its coldest setting and keep its doors closed. Check to ensure that the freezer temperature is at or below 0 °F and the refrigerator is at or below 40 °F.

-In case of a power outage, the appliance thermometers will indicate the temperatures in the refrigerator and freezer to help you determine if the food is safe.

Make sure you have appliance thermometers in your refrigerator and freezer.

-Freeze containers of water for ice to help keep food cold in the freezer, refrigerator, or coolers in case the power goes out. If your normal water supply is contaminated or unavailable, the melting ice will also supply drinking water.

-Freeze refrigerated items such as leftovers, milk, and fresh meat and poultry that you may not need immediately. This helps keep them at a safe temperature longer.

-Group food together in the freezer. This helps the food stay cold longer.

Have coolers on hand to keep refrigerated food cold if the power will be out for more than 4 hours.

-Purchase or make ice cubes in advance and store in the freezer for use in the refrigerator or in a cooler. Freeze gel packs ahead of time for use in coolers.

Anticipate and prepare in advance for transportation, nutritional and medical needs.

-If you have, pets contact Animal Control Centro at 872-5795. They will provide a safe haven for your pets.

IMPORTANT!

If the authorities from Civil Protection tell you to evacuate your home, do so. Do not hesitate, leave immediately, and find a shelter.  Stay on top of information provided by the authorities. Listen to the radio or TV for information.

Seguro Popular Continued:

Originally, they assigned you to a Seguro Poplar Clinic closest to your home. The clinics opens at 7 a.m. Monday – Friday and appointments are made on a first come first serve basis. At this clinic, you may see a general Practitioner for all non-emergency medical needs and preventive care. This includes Dental and Eye Care. If you need a specialist, they will refer you to one. If there is none on the island, they will send you to an affiliate in the mainland. Cozumel General Hospital is now designated as a caregiver for preventive care. The country is currently going through a health care reform; I expect that things will continue to change as the reform takes effect.

All Seguro Popular Emergencies are handled by Cozumel General Hospital. The hospital and ambulance ride if necessary are free of charge. There are also small pharmacies at the clinic. Their stock of medicine is very limited, but if they happen to have what you need, it is also free of charge.

They give you a handbook of rights and description of services that is in Spanish, but there is a website: http://www.seguro-popular.gob.mx/ that has all the same information. It is also in Spanish; remember to use the Google Chrome Translation feature.
