Women Voted for the first Time

On July 3, of 1955, Mexican women went to the polls to vote for the first time in federal elections; female suffrage is recognized thanks to the organization and participation of women in forums asking for citizen rights. This was 35 years after the women in the United States won the right to vote.

The 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution granted American women the right to vote, a right known as women’s suffrage, and was ratified on August 18, 1920, ending almost a century of protests.

100 Cozumel Residents to Receive Free Cataract Operations

Municipal President Pedro Joaquín announced that from July 27 to August 3, “Fundación Rementería” will send specialists who will perform 100 cataract operations to individuals in Cozumel.  The collaboration agreement with the City of Cozumel and the Spanish foundation, came about during his visit to Madrid, Spain to attend the International Tourism Fair.

President Joaquin stressed that the vision of his administration is to improve the quality of life of the inhabitants of Cozumel, by adding projects that directly impact the population. In this case, the most vulnerable social sectors that must have visual health for a full development of their daily activities. “The interventions, in total, would normally cost approximately 3.5 million pesos, but in this case they will be free,” he said.

Well, someone has taken The Cozumel Sun Garage Sale concept and turned it into a business. Hallelujah!

The Cozumel Sun Garage sales allows people in need access to all the donated items. The remaining items are then sold and those funds used for food, shelter, medical emergencies, as needed. Never the less, it is a wonderful model and already bringing much needed funds into the community.

Their Mission Statement:

We offer unique items at unique prices while we support as many local charities and projects as possible through our conscious business model.

In their own words, here is the process that they use with your donated items:

“When we receive a donation, due to our quality control, we separate it into 3 categories when it comes to clothing.

Giveaway:  If the clothing is defective, it’s gifted to a network of low-income families.

Bazaar: If it has a small defect, it’s sold in the fund-raising garage sales we host every 4-6 weeks (Next Sunday, July 21st)

Boutique: If it’s in perfect condition, it’s displayed in the boutique. This has proved to be the best way to avoid waste while offering these families the opportunity to use and sell the clothes as need be.

They are open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday – Saturday.

Register your neighborhood watch group with Comandante Luis Pablo Garcia. WhatsApp 52-987-112-9286. He will provide you with the enrollment form. The requirement is a minimum of five members including a designated President and Secretary.
