The Cozumel Sun News revisits information on Automobile registration, License plates, and Tarjeta de Circulación. All automobile transactions are handled by SEFIPLAN. This is their Department of Motor Vehicle.
If you purchase a vehicle in Cozumel you must go to SEFIPLAN to register the vehicle in your name and get your Quintana Roo plates.
Automobile Registration and Plates
New License Plates are issued every three years.
Originals and Copy of :
- Identification: “Credencial de Elector”, Professional Identity Card, or Passport. Foreigners must present Immigration Credentials.
- Original Factura or re-facturacion with copy of original Factura attached. (Example: Factura issued in Mexico with a copy of the original Factura of the vehicle that was perhaps purchased in the United States).
- Proof of address (Comprobante de Domicilio): Original and copy of Light (CFE) or Water (CAPA) receipt. The receipt must be current. If your residency is not in your name the Proof of residency is a copy of your lease or an authorization letter from the landlord. Provide a copy of his or her identification
- Newly purchased vehicles with the facture endorsed with the seller’s signature, must provide a copy of the seller’s identification.
- The past five years’ worth of receipts showing all taxes, fees, and annual renewals are current.
- The old plates. If you lost your plates you need a document from the Transito Department verifying that you do not owe any fees/taxes.
- CURP (See CURP section in the Cozumel Sun).
- Your email address
- Handicap plates bring a letter from your Doctor in Mexico.
Bring the vehicle in question as they will verify the Vehicle Identification number.
They have as yet to check for automobile insurance;
Purchasing the Tarjeta de Circulación
The Tarjeta de Circulación must be renewed every January.
You will Need:
The previous year’s Tarjeta de Circulación and your identification. Failure to have a current card will result in a fine.
