Mexican National Guard sets up check point, American Tourist dies in Motorcycle accident, Cold Fronts & the Cozumel Economy

On Tuesday morning the Mexican National Guard and elements of the National Institute of Migration (INM) in Cozumel, carried out a joint operation.

A checkpoint was installed in the southern part of the island in search of undocumented migrants. Vans transporting construction workers and buses transporting workers to hotels were screened.

Four men were detained, however, two were later released. The operation came as a result of constant denunciations of foreign people working in illegally in Cozumel.

The Cold Front & Cozumel Economy

The cold front and accompanying winds have caused Cozumel to close the port to vessels under 40 feet this past week. Everytime this happens, this causes a strain on the local economy.

It is estimated that there are some 450 dive trips scheduled in Cozumel daily. The estimated monetary loss is approximately $31, 500 dollars.

Snorkeling services, water games such as jet skis, parachutes, as well as other related services are not included in this estimate.

Tourist Dies in Motorcycle Accident

A Tourist died from head injuries incurred when his motorcycle lost control yesterday evening. The accident occurred in the north coastal highway at the Puerto Abrigo curve. (This dangerous curve has been the site of many fatal accidents.)

The American tourist was reported to have died instantly and was said to be in his thirties. A second passenger on the motorcycle was in critical condition at a private hospital.

Aurita’s Cozumel Corner

Ok, readers here we go with the start of a regular The Cozumel Sun News and information. I am trying a new format, and for this I need your input. I can either report more often with tidbits of the news as above. Or I can hold for more pertinent topics, and have more in-depth articles. What do you think? Combination of both?

A New Mexican Army

This issue brings to the surface two potential articles. The New Mexican National Guard is to eventually replace the now Federal, State and Municipal forces to create one large army. This is Mexico’s President’s Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) plan to eliminate corruption in the ranks.

Tourist Deaths

The other potential article is on Tourist Deaths. They mainly go unreported or under reported. We will never see a follow up article on the unfortunate death of the young man, God rest his soul, or his companion that we pray will recover.

In past years The Cozumel Sun News has been unsuccessful in getting statistics from the local government on motorcycle deaths. I believe that the fear is that Motorcycle and scooter rentals to tourist will decline.

The same can be said of all the other tourist areas, specially the water sports such as diving. It is understandable that accidents and natural deaths happen given the thousands that participate on any given week.

However, failure to report these incidents give the participants a feeling of invincibility. In my opinion, this leads to people being careless while on vacation.

Interested in an Airplane?

President AMLO is raffling off the presidential airplane!  Yep, after failing to find a buyer for Mexico’s equivalent of “Air force One” there is a national raffle taking place now. Tickets are available for any readers interested!

Airplane Raffle Correction

In looking for information on where to purchase tickets for Mexico’s Presidential airplane, I discovered that they are not yet available for sale! I have readers interested in purchasing a raffle ticket and will be certain to pass on the information as soon as it is available.

The Family Road Trip

Our family took a quick road trip over the holidays. Within the first couple of hours of driving on the mainland we blew a tire.  It was our first experience in a rental vehicle.

The jack was not strong enough for the van and there was no tool in the van to remove the lug nuts. Initially it was panic, three seniors, one in a wheel chair, two kids, and the heat! Then I remembered my own article in The Cozumel Sun!

We called The Green Angels (see this section in The Cozumel Sun) by telephone 078 in Quintana Roo. It was a long wait as we were in the middle of nowhere, but they rescued us.

The experience gave us a better awareness! Each state has their own emergency number, the next state was 074, the state after that was an actual telephone number.

You better believe as we crossed each state line, I wrote down the information. Also to stay on top of are the mile markers along the way. You must be able to tell then where you are based on those mile markers.

Until Next Time!
