Cozumel News July 24, 2020: Covid-19 Update
This report is taken from Facebook Live addresses to the public July 23 and 24. Governor Carlos Joaquin addressed the State on the 23rd. Municipal President Pedro Joaquin Delbouis adressed Cozumel both 23 and the 24.
In the coming week of July 27 through August 2, the Southern zone of State of Quintana Roo will still be in the RED Semaforo. The Northern tourist Zone that includes Cozumel will remain in the Orange Semaforo.
As of today, there are 77 active cases of COVID-19 in Cozumel. There have been 188 positive cases since March. However, this is less than the projected model of 200.
The current 55% Hospital Capacity is saturating the Public Hospitals of IMSS and ISSTES.
Persons that do not take care of themselves are risking the lives of others as well as their own. Comsequently, those people are forcing the Doctors and Nurses to risk their lives to care for them.
Firstly, there are not enough trained medical personnel in Cozumel to care for ICU patients. Secondly, Cozumel does not have the number of beds. Above all, we do not want to resort to transferring people to hospitals in Playa del Carmen.
Effective Tomorrow bottle liquor sales end by five p.m. In other words, sellers of alcohol will maintain the Sunday hours every day until further notice.
The Curfew is still 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. daily. Asked by many citizens to extend the curfew, President Joaquin explained that we cannot extend the Curfew. Shorter hours would hurt the restaurant industry and similarly, affect tourism.
The Safety Campaign
Over 50 youths continue covering the city encouraging locals and visitors alike to follow the safety mandates. They have handed out over 3,000 face masks.
Tourism Progress
30 hotels are now open at 23% capacity. 83 Restaurants are open in Cozumel. There are 23 Beach Clubs operating on the island. Likewise, there is improved traffic coming in both in flights and via the ferries.
We must Maintain
President Joaquin reported this afternoon that they have been forced to break up many parties and gatherings. Although many people have been sanctioned in Cozumel, too many people are getting laxed. Facemasks are mandatory, however, many people are still not listening.
The Municipal President and Governor both begged the population to follow the mandates. Specifically, safe distancing, wearing of masks, washing hands and disinfecting surfaces. They stress that we cannot afford to have to close down again. Above all, Cozumel cannot lose the jobs that have been recovered so far.
From the Question and Answer Section
(With my Two cents worth)
They have fined more than 800 people for not following the safety mandates. (Yet, people keep reporting tourists and locals alike without facemasks all over town).
There have been no reported cases of dengue on the island. (A few people commented they either had dengue or knew of someone that has had dengue this year.)
The Colonies most affected in Cozumel by active cases of COVID-19 have been Centro, the San Miguel(s), San Gervasio, and Emilio Zapata.
Great News!
There is a good probability that we will have a COVID-19 vaccination by the end of the year. We must all do our part to follow the safety procedures to enable us to survive until that time.

Cozumel Public Transportation
July 18, 2020 was the last day of Public Transportation in Cozumel until further notice, per Professor Marco Antonio Gonzales Angos, Director of Cozumel Public transit. Cozumel Public Transportation has been operating with good intentions, following all the safety & hygiene protocols.
However, the Director explained that in lieu of the stay at home directives and possible lack of funds, very few people have utilized the service. Most important, the number of people riding the transports did not justify the cost of gasoline and other expenses.
Sporting Events Cofirmed for 2020
The two Ironman sports competitions in Cozumel will take place again this year. Likewise, there is a 99% probability that the GFNY competition will also be contracted.
Ironman 70.3: September 27, 2020 – Gran Fondo New York (GFNY): November 8, 2020 – Full Ironman: November 22, 2020.
Great News for Cozumel! All three races have worldwide participation.
Private Schools Called Out
Thank You: Don Beto Czm
As a result of the hard blow to the economy of Cozumeleño families due to the pandemic, some parents have chosen to remove their children from private schools. (or change them to a less expensive school). However, some private institutions have been requiring payment before releasing the school records.
The Commission on Human Rights of the state of Quintana Roo (CDHEQROO) is reviewing this issue, said María Del Mar Barrera Aguilar, Deputy Visitor of the (CDHEQROO). She clarified that, although studying in a private school has a cost, the official documents they generate do not.
