Pan de Muerto, or “Bread of the Dead”, is a sweet bread that is baked during the Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, celebrated in Mexico on November 1st and 2nd. Every Grocery store in Cozumel will have tons of this bread displayed this week
If you are ambitious, you can make your own Day of the Dead bread. This recipe takes 3 hours and 40 minutes and yields 20 slices. Here is one of many recipes that can be found online:
Pan De Muertos – Day of the Dead Bread Ingredients
- 1 1⁄2 cups of flour
2. 1⁄2 cup of sugar
3. 1 teaspoon of salt
4. 2 tablespoons of dry yeast
5. 1⁄2 cup of milk
6. 1⁄2 cup of water
7. 1⁄2 cup of butter
8. 4 eggs
9. 4 1⁄2 cups of flour
10. 1⁄2 cup of sugar
11. 1⁄3 cup of orange juice
Pan De Muertos – Day of the Dead Bread Directions
Mix all dry ingredients together except the 4 1/2 cups of flour. In small pan, heat the milk, the water, and the butter. Add liquid mixture to the dry mixture. Beat well. Mix in the eggs and 1 1/2 cups of flour. Beat well. Put in rest of flour, little by little. Knead the mixture for 10 minutes. Put dough in bowl and allow to rise until has doubled in size, or about an hour and a half. Punch dough down and reshape it with some “bone” shapes on top to decorate it. Let rise another hour. Heat 1/2 cup sugar and the 1/3 orange juice over stove until melted. Brush over dough. Bake at 350°F for about 40 minutes.
