Cozumel News December 5, 2020: A Tax Break January 1, A COVID Safety message from Comandante Garcia, Cozumel and COVID, The Cozumel Community Kitchens, How you can help Cozumel, and more!
A Tax Decrease Effective January 1st!
Great News for our State of Quintana Roo! As promised, President Obrador has announced that our State´s designation has been changed enabling us to receive:
A decrease in IVA taxes from 16% to 8%.
The ISR will be reduced to 20% from 30%.
Chetumal will once again be a FREE Zone.
Exemption from the general tax on imports.
Exemption from Customs Processing Laws.
A COVID Safety Message from Comandante Garcia
Hello friends, help flood the social networks about the use of😷😷😷 face masks and responsible Departures. We are close to a new total closure*; we have time to save Christmas and have a December of hope.
Going out responsibly helps thousands of people keep their jobs.
A new closure involves thousands of lost jobs and a Black Christmas for those who do not have a steady job.
In your work, in your business and wherever you go, follow these steps:
Keep a safe distance.
Wear face masks
Wash your hands frequently
Do not go out if you have symptoms or are sick
Please wherever you go, be responsible
For your health, that of your family, your friends, and neighbors.
Take care!!! 😷😷😷
It is better to put pressure in and demand the correct use of face masks than to return to confinement.
LET’S BE RESPONSIBLE!!!
We need to comply properly!!!
Let us help each other!!!

Cozumel and Covid
I included in this issue a Message from Comandante Luis Pablo Garcia asking that we maintain all the COVID-19 safety prevention steps during this Holiday Season. The season is already upon us with Our Lady of Guadalupe celebrations that started December 4th. This is of course followed by Christmas and New Year´s, all times when families and friends get together.
The Federal Traffic Light
Let me back up. The State of Quintana Roo has had us categorized in the Yellow Traffic Section for months now. In fact, in the national Traffic Light, the Federal Government has our state in the ORANGE traffic light, right next to the red*. Red would mean all businesses to close again.
The State Traffic Light
The Governor of our state listed tourism as essential due to the economic impact, and basically has been maintaining our own separate system of calculation to keep tourism open. I am not judging the move; I am stating the facts. Businesses are trying to survive; people must eat.
My concern with the YELLOW is that people tend to let their guard down. They go out, have a cocktail, and forget the danger that we are in. After months of confinement, I imagine there is a natural high to be out and about again. Unfortunately, so happy, we forget that we are in a life-or-death battle with a virus. We forget that the virus is winning.
Tourists in Cozumel
The horrific increase in infections and deaths in the United States is frightening. Other countries are also experiencing a second wave of infections. Yet, tourists are arriving daily to our island. Any one of them could be carrying the deadly virus. I understand the ferries are not following the safe distance seating. Everyone should be wearing masks and maintaining a safe distance, as should we.
Vulnearable Population
Nothing has changed. The vulnerable population should not be leaving home unless necessary. Those living with someone in that vulnerable category should do a complete cleansing before going anywhere near their loved one. They should be taking every possible precaution while out of the home to ensure they do not carry the virus home.
The Vaccine
The vaccine is in sight, but we are not there yet! Keep in mind that we are on an island with limited beds, limited qualified personnel, and limited resources. Keep in mind that the numbers that we post for Cozumel, like any other city should be multiplied by 8 or 9. This is the CDC recommendation for a more accurate count. For our little island, those numbers are not acceptable!
What we now Know
We know that we can stay safe by wearing a mask, keeping our distance, and washing hands frequently, cleaning surfaces, etc. There is no excuse!
We know that many people are dying, unable to survive, many due to preexisting conditions. Also, we know minorities are at high risk for preexisting conditions. (This is the entire local population.) Covid-19 patients can be reinfected and often have relapses.
What we do not know
We do not know how long symptoms of COVID-19 last. Many people all over the world are facing long term serious symptoms months after the initial onset. There is even a name now, we are called the long haulers. Doctors do not yet know if COVID-19 victims will have permanent damage because of the infection.
Respect Yourself or At Least Respect Us!
If you genuinely love Cozumel and the people, respect them and protect them by following the directives. If you do not care about your welfare, or if you do not believe the seriousness of this virus, that is on you. Wearing a mask and maintaining a safe distance is not an option for you, it is a requirement.

The Cozumel Sun Community Assistance
Over the past years TCS has raised funds for groceries, medical emergencies, medicine, clothing, school related expenses, and repairing shelters.
We have a “”drop in” meal policy, we feed the hungry no questions asked. Children in the immediate (Colonia Independencia) and surrounding neighborhoods are our priority.
The Cozumel Sun sponsors several Local families on an ongoing basis. Over the past years we set up a few start-up businesses. The goal is to train and assist some families to become self-sufficient. We also operated a daily garage sale for years as a means of raising funds.
In addition, we publish articles that feature community programs in need of donations and volunteers. We encourage both residents and visitors to give back to this island paradise by volunteering and donating to existing community programs.
TCS has successful matched those that want to help and those in need for many years.
