Cozumel News March 5, 2024: The Cozumel Sun Book Exchange, Fun & Spanish Practice at the Library, Museo de la Isla de Cozumel, Cozumel Art, La Monina, The Buccanos Cooking Experience, New from Buccanos, Sunset at the Blue Angel, and More!

The Cozumel Sun Book Exchange Back in Business!

The CS Book Exchange is now part of Cozumel’s Public Library. The “Biblioteca de Cozumel” is found on 30th Avenida and Calle 8 in Colonia Centro. It sits right next to Ebeneezer Church and kiddie Corner from Soriana. The hours are currently from   8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday Through Friday.

The library has followed their promise to refurbish the shelves and organize the hundreds of books we provided.

The staff are now aware that the exchange is different. You do not need a library card for the exchange. There is no time limit or requirement to bring back the book. Bring your book and exchange it for another just like before.

However, I am no longer there to organize the shelves! Please limit the number of books you exchange, one or two should be the limit. It was a nightmare when someone wiped out an entire shelf.

If you have any problems, contact me, or ask to speak to Eva Maria. Her WhatsApp is 52 987 118 0032. She speaks English!

Please donate to the library when you can. They will appreciate volunteers. This is an excellent opportunity to help the community and practice your Spanish.

Fun & Spanish Practice at the Library!

Are you looking for a fun activity to do in Cozumel? Come to the Public Library every Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. We gather, read, talk, and have a fun time. We share our interpretation, talk about slang in English and Spanish which usually leads to a good laugh! You will meet new people, mingle with locals and expats alike, and improve your language skills while having fun!

Creative Writing is the current name of the group; however, we are seeking a new name to better describe what we do. The activity is completely Free!

Museo de la Isla de Cozumel

The Museum of Cozumel is excellent. If you have not been there, it is a must see. In addition to the regular exhibits, the Museum hosts Art Exhibits, Social Events, and Classes.

Historic

The Museum is in a historic building dating back to the 1930s. It was once one of the first hotels in Cozumel. The Museum offers permanent exhibition rooms, a broad vision of the geography, ecosystems, history, and culture of the island of Cozumel.

Recently Remodeled

In its 11 interactive rooms, discover in a playful, informed, and entertaining way, the origin, natural diversity, and stories of resilience of its inhabitants.

It also has 2 temporary rooms for local and international artists and a special room that pays tribute to 146 years of Carnival tradition.

Take a tour of the Museum to learn about the origin, development, and customs of the Island’s inhabitants. Its main function is to protect and preserve the cultural heritage of the Cozumeleños.

Accessible

The “Museo de la Isla de Cozumel” has bathrooms and an elevator for accessibility. The Museo is under the umbrella of the “Fundación de Parques y Museo de la Isla”.

Aurita’s Cozumel Corner

Last time my friend Wendy Starr came for her annual visit, we spent most of the time at the hotel as I was too weak to go out. I felt guilty, as I also left her alone virtually every other day to receive transfusions and attend doctor appointments.

I want to dedicate this section to all the activities we had the opportunity to do this February during her 9-day visit. Luckily, her visit coincided with my 8-day break from chemotherapy, I was in good health most of the time.

Not necessarily in order here is part One of Two:

Cozumel Art

What a wonderful experience! Even if you flunked drawing stick people like me, you could create a work of art. First decide the item that you wish to decorate with a painting; a hat, visor, cap, a choice of two diverse types of bags, or a cushion cover.

You pick your choice of item. You can go to Art Cozumel Facebook page and browse through the many designs to paint. They will draw the outline and have it ready for you. They provide everything that you need and will guide you as you paint.

I opted to provide a picture of my chihuahua, Samson. However, when I got through painting, he looked more like Cujo getting ready to attack!

The great News Yen and her assistant Ashley then improved upon my work and miraculously turned it into a work of art. The drawing on my bag looked just like him. Rest assured that you will also walk away with an artwork you can brag about. Below is Wendy and I with our creations. Note her beautiful hat!

La Monina

The class was a three-hour relaxing experience at La Monina, restaurant located at the first palapa from downtown heading north.  You can enjoy a relaxing cocktail as you paint and stay for a snack or meal.

The atmosphere is soothing, the music is the right volume so you can converse without having to shout. The beautiful sea breeze adds to the atmosphere. The service and food are excellent.

The Buccanos Cooking Experience

This excellent experience boasts “Learning the tricks and techniques alongside chef and restauranteur Ines Falkenberg in your own private dinner party and culinary experience. This cooking experience will leave you inspired while you enjoy your creative results in a laid-back atmosphere.”

This is Wendy’s forte! Cooking is her passion as well as her career. I contacted Ms. Ines right away when we had her vacation dates. This was six weeks out, and February classes had ONE slot left. I signed up Wendy to attend without me.

She gave a five-star rating to the entire experience, from Ms. Ines’s professionalism and knowledge, the class experience, and the excellent meal and cocktails.

Sunset at Blue Angel

Because of first COVID, loss of Charlie and then my illness, I have not been anywhere to speak of in ages. Blue Angel is one of those places dear to my heart that I have missed.

The Blue Angel Restaurant located in the pictured palapa is an excellent location to watch the sunset.

Blue Angel Resort is a diver’s perfect place to stay while enjoying the beautiful dive sites Cozumel has to offer.

One of the evenings we went to Blue Angels to watch the Sunset. I was thrilled that Miss Eva still has the winning combination of great food, service, and good music!
