Property Tax and Garbage Collection discounts have been scheduled.  If you pay your 2014 property taxes and garbage collection fees this month between November 18th to the 30th you will receive a 25% discount. If you pay in advance next month during December 1st – 16th you will receive a 20 percent discount.  Payments made during December 17th – 31st will be discounted 15 percent. You can still qualify for a 10 percent discount if you pay your property taxes and garbage collection fees between January 1st and February 28th.

Those of you lucky enough to be my age and hold a senior card (INAPAM) qualify for a 50% discount on your property taxes that trumps all the above! If you do not already have one, read the instructions on how to apply under the Living in Cozumel Section of the Cozumel Sun.

Municipal Operating Licenses will be discounted 10% if the account is paid in full and the account is current.

Note: Last year the garbage Collection invoices were not made available until the first of the year.

Cozumel Hopes to Attract Medical Tourism

surgeonsCozumel will be represented in the National Forum on Medical Tourism 2013, to be held on November 13th in Mexico City. There is a foreign demand for medical services in the areas of Plastic Surgery, orthopedic, Pacemakers, Stem Cell, and Dental.

Tourists in the United States and Canada find Mexico as an alternative answer to medical care, one that is equal in quality but at a better price. Cozumel has ample possibilities of attracting Medical Tourism. As an example, the cost of a pacemaker in the United States is $30,000 U.S. Dollars. In Cozumel, $8,000 U.S. Dollars would cover the pacemaker and the hospitalization.

The Water Taxis

Cruise Ship 4

The Ministry of Communications and Transport, through the Directorate General of Merchant Marine, authorized the operation of water taxis from the cruise ship docks and passenger dock downtown. The president of the Business Coordinating Board, Lille Demita Cabrera, revealed over the weekend that the project was not submitted to the commercial, social tourism and the island for approval, as it is not required.

According to Oscar Pedro Joaquín Delbouis, president of the Employers’ Confederation of the Mexican Republic (Coparmex), the commissioning of the water taxis that will transport tourists from the pier docks on the south to the Center of the city, will benefit the businesses that are now at a disadvantage. Very little tourism now flows from the piers in the south to downtown from November to March. The water Taxis will generate a flow of tourists to the businesses in the center of town.

He stated that the Taxi drivers should look to improve their services and be competitive because it will be very difficult for them (drivers) to get the Federal authorization repealed.

On the opposing side, Cozumel Taxi drivers are seeking public support to prevent startup of the Water Taxis. Under the slogan “No to water taxis, Unite for Cozumel and its economy “, the union that represents them, with the support of 27,000 taxi drivers of the entire state of Quintana Roo, organized and reached a united front “to the end”.

Peniche Eduardo Rodriguez, a State Level Union Leader, met with his counterpart from Cozumel to begin to coördinate actions to prevent boats Magna Naviera, SA de CV “Overseas”, from transporting tourists from the cruise ship docks to the San Miguel passenger dock.

Fernando Marrufo Martin, union secretary-general of the drivers on the island, said they will be delivering brochures and other printed information to the public to seek their support.
