An argument between two visiting Texans turned to violence on December 24th, as one pushed the other from the balcony reported to be six meters high. The 64-year-old man suffered a fractured skull, ribs and a punctured lung. The article written on the 26th of December reports that his health is stable but serious, and his friend is in custody. I have found no other updates on the incident.

zeta gasCozumel Gas Station Robbed

On the night of Sunday December 21st, between $50,000 to $60,000 pesos were stolen by two thieves inside the company Zeta Gas. The thieves knew of the existence of a night watchman and a safe with money from the Saturday and Sunday receipts; they were well prepared, they even had a tool to cut the cabinet.

Jesús García Pérez, night watchman of the gas plant, reported to the police that a hooded male pointing a firearm approached him. A second man appeared, he ordered him to enter the bathroom and to lie on the floor. They tied his hands behind his back and tied his legs below the knees with rope and pieces of cloth. No arrests have been made to date.

Aurita’s Corner

Merry Christmas and Happy New Years! This issue has the only news in the last two weeks that is not a report on motorcycle accidents, how many cruise ships and airplanes are arriving daily, the high occupancy in the hotels, and the economic relief that the tourists are providing with their purchases and patronage of local businesses. The Ferries are also doing a good business, some 12,000 passengers daily. The $350 pesos per car promotion is still going on in the vehicle Ferry until January 7th.

Thank you for giving me the best Christmas present ever! The donations from a couple of anonymous donors of cash, a generous donation from Ines at Buccanos, and another from Eva at Blue Angel, I was able to deliver:

60 Meters of electrical Cable

1 Bathroom Set (toilet and Sink)

15 Bags of Cement

1 truck load of sand

In addition, a wonderful Lady donated 70 new floor tiles, and our Liz Toth donated blankets. I was surprised by a family that reads The Cozumel Sun from the United States that are vacationing in Playa. They visited the family on the afternoon of the 24th and supplied toys for the children and money for food. I am so blessed! Thank you all for making my Christmas wish come true!

I brought the family to spend Christmas with us, so the children would awaken to presents from Santa Claus. When we went to pick them up, I delivered huge bags of dog and cat food I purchased at Sam’s Club and 20 kilos of chicken feed for the chicken and turkeys from a local pet store. I had watched them feed them before, leftover food gathered from other people’s trashcans. They graciously offered me an old plastic chair to sit on while I watched with joy the feeding of the dogs, cat, chickens and turkeys.

I took a good look around me and realized this is their only chair. There is a mattress, two hammocks and one plastic chair. I am blessed with many tables and chairs, so I will be donating a tall round wooden table and four stools so they can at least sit together and eat. I still have $100 U.S.  Left over to match the tiles that were donated and  purchase the rest needed to tile the floor.

Thanks to the collective effort, they now have a cement floor (was dirt a week ago) and a cement floor to ceiling closet is almost done. I want to remind everyone that these people are not out to take advantage. They are good Christian people, non-drinkers, family orientated, and hard working. Their palapa burned down with everything they owned in it that took them years to collect.

I hope your Christmas was as blessed as ours was; we were able to feed about 45 family and friends over the two days. May God bless you all with a Happy, Healthy, and prosperous New Years.

happy New Year
