Cozumel Removing 50 Bus Stops

Cozumel Urban Development is removing 50 bus stops that were placed around town in late 2013.

The company that installed the bus stops at various points in the city, even in places where there is no mass transit routes, had a concession allowing them to place up to 100 structures with two marquees (billboards) each. At the end of the 2009-2011 Administration, headed by Juan Carlos González Hernández, the concession was granted to the company Customized Services SA de CV, of businessman Victor Manuel Negrete Villalobos. It was during the last three months of the management of Municipal President Aurelio Joaquin Gonzalez (2011-2013) when these iron frames began to be seen in the city. The business, the same one that installed parking meters on the boardwalk, no longer exists.

In September 2013, seals of suspension were placed on the structures, with the arrival of Mayor Fredy Efren Martin Marrufo, for anomalies in the system, such as blocking the crosswalk installed at distances of about 50 meters from each other. A new model was presented to the authorities of the municipality and approved, that adheres to the needs expressed by the community, revealed Humberto Suarez Castillo, Director of Urban Development.

“We are committed to fulfilling the word of the Mayor with Cozumel families, this time performing maintenance in  ‘San Miguel I’ parks and increasingly recovering public spaces,” he said. He also reported that currently they are working in parks “Solidarity”, located on 5th Street South between 20 and 18 South; “Amigo Mech” on 1st Street between 16th and 18th Street South; “La Paz” in Calle 1 Sur between 12 and 14; “Carlos Canseco” in South 7th Street between 4 and 6 Sur, and  “La Amistad”, on 7th Street South between 12 and 14 South.
