tires1Cozumel Moves 30 Tons of Unusable Tires Out Of the Island

tires2It was reported on January 29th that  the Municipal Government through the Centro de Acopio de Materiales Reciclables (CAMAR) moved off the island 30 tons of unusable tires, which were collected citywide in  the program “Zero tires, Cozumel Island,”

Abed Zapata Silva, coordinator of the CAMAR  Supervision Unit, explained that with this program a suitable destination for used tires is provided to avoid technical, economic, environmental and public health problems. Since the material is difficult to compact in a landfill, the process is expensive. He said it is common knowledge that scrap tires are breeding grounds of dengue mosquito (Aedes aegypti), so it is imperative to get the tires out of the island.

tires3The 30 tons of tire scrap was sent to plant “Ecoltec”, located in the city Macuspana. The plant recycles the tires into an alternative fuel for the cement manufacturing process.

The coordinator of the CAMAR Monitoring Unit, invited citizens not to throw the tires on undeveloped land or vacant lots, as in the rainy season they are the perfect containers for water to accumulate and thus the proliferation of disease-bearing mosquitoes.
