COZUMEL, 21 February – Some situations of virtual extortion attempt have been registered in recent days, the and Municipal President, Fredy Marrufo Martín, has given precise instructions to carry in order to protect Cozumel families and safeguard the physical integrity of citizens.  Gumercindo Jiménez Cuervo, Cozumel Director of Public Security said that meetings were held with staff from the center of communication, computation and command (C4) of Cozumel and ministerial authorities to generate strategies to prevent these cases to continue in the future.

“We recommend citizens to hang up immediately, and locate their family members, and try not to be deceived by the malicious people. These people sometimes find their victim’s information in a previous phone call or Internet scam. The important thing is to keep calm,” said Jiménez Cuervo.

fraud 2The Director of Public Security, urges people who receive this type of call to dial 066 or 911, as it also is known. The first thing that you must know is the number the extortion call was made from. This number will immediately be checked against a listing of previous fraudulent calls.

Note: This is a crime that I heard about years ago that has been taking place in the mostly the mainland of Mexico. In recent years a few cases have started popping up on the island. Here is how it works: Criminals find out enough personal information about you and your family from telephone conversations or the social media. Someone then calls you and tells you that they have kidnapped a loved one and in order for their safe return you must pay a ransom. Armed with your personal information, they are very convincing and many people have paid the ransom only to find out that their loved one was never kidnapped and in danger.

Aurita’s Corner: Where is The Cozumel Sun?

AURAFirst, I want to express my deepest apologies to my readers. I left our beautiful paradise on January 6th for a much needed medical checkup for myself, my husband Charles and our friend Sharon in the United States.

This was a planned trip, that had been put off in anticipation of qualifying for Medicare upon our 65th birthday in 2015 (Charles and I). We purchased our supplemental insurance and waited the six months required for the insurance to cover preexisting conditions. What was not anticipated was the length of time it would take to get referrals to specialists and how far in advance these appointments needed to be made.

Never the less, the problem really came into play with my health. I had been diagnosed with arthritis in my knees, hips and back. I waited too long to take care of my health and by the time that I arrived in California, my left hip was completely deteriorated. The weather all of January and most of February was COLD. Add to this that my son’s home has no working heating, my arthritis flared to the point of crippling me.  The pain that is caused by my left hip is constant and many times unbearable specially at night, and ever present when I am sitting, standing, and walking. I am walking with a cane for short distances, it is impossible to walk long distances.

The good news, I am getting a full hip replacement on March 15th. The bad news is that I will have to go through the therapy and healing process before I am allowed to return. I promise that I will do my best to get back to work as soon as possible. Please follow The Cozumel Sun Group and Facebook page. I make the time to contribute to our Facebook pages daily.

While I have kept up on the latest Cozumel news by reading my usual sources and press releases, mentally I have not had the stamina to put out an edition. I have been unable to get pass the constant pain to translate and pass the information on to my readers. For the first time ever, my article in English did not appear in Tiempo de Cozumel. Please accept my apologies, but know this: I WILL BE BACK!
