News Cozumel: When will we open?
Governor Carlos Joaquin Talks Reopening

There has been rumors and speculation based on the never-ending parade of speeches and interview from The President of Mexico, The Governor of Quintana Roo, and our own Municipal president. They seem to contradict each other at times.

Nothing is Set in Concrete

Instead of daily reports via Facebook, I chose not to publish what I considered to be speculations. After weeks of confusing statements, Pedro Joaquin, Cozumel´s Municipal President, finally stated the obvious. He growled at the listening audience and stated, ¨We have no opening date, the state has no opening date, the federal government has no set opening date, it will be based on the number of COVID-19 Cases that we have.¨

Today´s Numbers
June 1st

As of today, May 30, 2020, the Governor stated that we will NOT be open for business June first. We will continue as we are with essential businesses only.

Sample: Color Code System NOT OFFICIAL!
June 8th

He put out the date of June 8th as the day we slowly start ¨The Reactivation Plan¨ of Quintana Roo.  The plan will be based at what color level we are at. Each level will be described and have instructions and restrictions to be detailed in a plan to be published this week.

Tourism is Essential

Tourism has been moved to the essential section as five dollars of every ten dollars made in the state comes from tourism. But NOT all tourism businesses will be open in the beginning. Once again, they will let us know.

A Glimpse of the Plan

He used an example of the plan. Hotels will be told how many rooms they can have open. Restaurants will be regulated by the number of tables that they can have, and transportation, by the number of seats.

The Last to Leave Home

He stressed that the vulnerable population must remain at home. Everyone must continue to wear masks and maintain the safe distance. In other words, all the restrictions will be maintained until such time as we are COVID-free.

We can go back to Phase 0 and only have essential businesses at anytime that the number of COVID-19 positive cases increase!

I will not bore you with any more speculations until such time as they tell us what color we fall under and what exactly that means. I expect that to be in the next 24 hours.
