Delta Comes to Town

Hurricane Delta October 7, 2020

Hurricane Delta arrived in Cozumel yesterday (October 7th) at dawn. The hurricane category four that was initially coming at us, slowed down at the last minute. We thankfully did not have any fatalities. The major damage was flooding and downed trees. This caused loss of electricity and internet, service accross the island.

State and local personel went right to work to clean up and restore services on the island. Citizens across the island got together to clean up the neighborhoods. This massive task continues today throughout the island.

Our Status
Part of a Tree on Our Porch Roof

Our power was restored late yesterday evening. One of our internet providers, Telmex, is out of commission. The cable was downed by the winds during the storm. We will not have that service for an estimated two to three days. Thankfully, we have a second provider, Cablemas that is now functioning, However, it is slow! Be patient with us as the service goes in and out.

News from the State Secretary of Health

October 8, 2020

There is a drastic increase statewide between the COVID-19 reports of yesterday, October 7 and today, October 8.th.

Yesterday, a to-date total 381 positive cases were reported. Today, that number is 429. This an increase of 48 cases.

The number of to-date fatalities on the 7th was 68. Today, the total is 91. This is an increase of 23 fatalities.

The number of recovered cases went from 279 to 301. This is an increase of 22 people. The hospital occupancy remains at 10%.

Why the Increase?

There is an explanation for the increase in the posting. However, it is unreadable. Sources tell me they changed how they calculate the report. I doubt this increase took place in 24 hours. According to the above numbers, yesterday we had 34 active cases recovering. Today we have 37 active cases of people recovering. That difference of 3 is less alarming!

Coming Tomorrow

Stay tuned tomorrow for the report on The Epidemiological Traffic Light (Semaforo). That report will determine next week´s status of the reopening plan. This will be in effect for the week of October 12 through October 18.

Cozumel has been in the ¨Yellow traffic light. See ¨What is Semaforo Yellow¨ Cozumel Sun News September 7, 2020.
