COVID-19 Semaforo Week of March 29 – April 4

The following reports that in Quintana Roo, we are moving towards the color green.  However, relaxation of safety procedures in recent days has generated an increase in infections. Note that the daily reports from the Secretaria de Salud Quintana Roo have changed.

The daily reports from Secretaria de Salud Quintana Roo that we now post on Facebook only gives statewide numbers. As a result, we have no idea on the number of infections, deaths, etc. on the island. The only break down reported by municipality is the number of vaccines administered to date.

Cozumel COVID Vaccine Update

The First Dose for the over 60

I have postponed this issue in hopes of having news on the arrival and timeline of the application of a second dose of the Pfizer vaccine. As you are aware, half of the over sixty population received the first dose February 25, 26, and the 27th.  On March 8th, a second round of first dose vaccine took place for the over 60 populations.

I received my first dose February 25
Second Vaccine Dose for the Over 60

As previously reported, people that went to Cozumel General at the end of February were given second dose appointments for March 18 and 19th. Seniors at other locations were informed that they would be contacted. Unfortunately, there has been no official word on the arrival of the vaccines to date. According to research the second dose should be administered between three to six weeks. Consequently, this will make my deadline to receive the second dose effectively APRIL 8TH.

Update: Municipal President Pedro Juaquin just appeared live on Sol899fm. Related to the vaccines, he stated that 5,000 doses daily are arriving in Mexico City. However, the federal government is in control of the distribution. He is anticipating that we will received more vaccines in the coming week.

Vaccines for the First Line Responders

Pictured in the January 16th issue Administering the first dose of the vaccine to Medical Personnel

In The Cozumel Sun issue of January 16, 2021, I reported that vaccination of medical personnel and other First Line Responders was taking place at Cozumel General Hospital. This was accompanied by a picture. Subsequently, I assumed that all First Line Respondersl had received their first and second doses of the vaccine by the end of February.

Not all First Line Responders and Medical Personnel Vaccinated

I discovered that the only personnel that received a first dose were those directly working with COVID-19 infected patients in the public hospital. In other words, we have hundreds of doctors, nurses, hospital administrators and general workers that have not been vaccinated. They have scheduled a protest for this coming week.

The Municpal President addresssed this major discrepancy today. The Municipality has placed an urgent request to the Federal Government for vaccines to cover all Cozumel medical personnel in the public and private sectors.

The Second Dose Arrived
Second dose arriving Saturday at 3 a.m.

This past Saturday an article appeared in “Voz Urbana” stating that a shipment of 162 doses of the vaccine had arrived at three in the morning. Subsequently at 8:30 that morning they started administering the second dose to First Line Responders at Cozumel General. The article stated that this second dose was being administered to the personnel that had received their first dose the end of February. However, to the best of my knowledge that group of medical peronnel recieved their first dose 10 weeks ago in January.

In conclusion, I am hoping that there was a second set of medical personnel that received their first dose at the end of February along with some of us. Unfortunately, if this second dose was administered to the January personnel, they cannot possibly be effective! Today, the Municipal President reported that it was 150 doses. He did not respond to my comment on the time limit for the second dose to be effective.

Aurita’s Cozumel Corner

I need to apologize to some of you big time! I am still experiencing reoccurring COVID symptoms which includes fatigue, brain fog, along with some other physical ailments. Some days I am perfectly fine. Some days it is a struggle to get out of bed.

I am so Sorry!

In my edition of February 13th, I mentioned the need to replace crutches and a nebulizer that had been loaned out and never returned. A wonderful couple contacted me within weeks and donated a virtually new pair of crutches. I did not write down their name nor did I take a picture.

Once again this week a wonderful couple came to the Papeleria bearing a brand new nebulizer and a gift card for the community kitchens. Once again, it was one of those days that I was barely functioning. I neither wrote down their names nor took their picture.

PLEASE forgive me! You know who you are, send me an email with your information and a photograph. My email is auraholguin@thecozumelsun.com . I will like to follow up your donation with an official letter from The Cozumel Sun thanking you for your generous gifts!

Papeleria Novedades Mama Lilly Closing

History

Papeleria and Novedades Mama Lilly was started by the Cozumel Sun to assist a local family to become self-sufficient. The store was owned and operated by the Martinez family. This wonderful small business experienced financial difficulties like others on the island.

Services

The Papeleria provided affordable school supplies, internet access, and grants to children in the immediate community. Only blocks from IMSS hospital and Clinic, it did a decent business of making copies. However, copies and printing alone could not keep the doors open. The only real profit comes from sale of inventory.

Officially Closing April 1

The Papeleria will officially close as a business effective April 1. There is no way that we could continue funding the store at no visible profit. There is a ton of inventory and furnishings that is available for sale. If you know anyone with a similar business that can use the inventory or furnishings, please send them our way. We will continue selling the inventory online, onsite, and making copies and printing while we have the equipment on hand.
