Cozumel Seniors
Friends Michael and Carolyn Cain posted the following on seniors in Cozumel:
¨This is how many seniors live here in Cozumel, collection of plastic, bottles, and cans! They do receive Social Security, but the amount is only about $150 – $400 monthly, barely enough to live on! Yet, the ones I have spoken with are incredibly happy!! So many lessons to learn here in Cozumel as I am so humbled by their unwavering faith in God and their zest for life!!!¨
My Two Cents Worth!
I shared this on our Facebook pages and groups and want to add a reminder that while incredibly happy they suffer a difficult life. Do you know that a person over 35 cannot find employment with most businesses? Businesses prefer to hire younger workers that will cost less money in medical insurance. That is why you see so many entrepreneurs selling their food and refreshments.
Unable to live life on the $150 to $400 monthly, seniors continue working any means they can to support themselves. Prior to the Pandemic, many seniors bagged groceries at the store. They are not salaried. They only get the tips they earned for bagging your groceries, handing you a grocery cart, or directing you in or out of the parking lot. I want to remind you that is also the case for many waiters that you see on the island. Many are working for tips only when the restaurant is struggling to stay open.
Keep Cozumel Seniors in your thoughts and prayers, keep supporting Cozumel Community Kitchens that are reaching out and feeding seniors. If you can afford to go out and eat, tip generously, many people working today were out of work for almost a year.

Do you have an article on what Cozumel is like without the cruise ships.
I imagine it’s similar to when I used to come in the late 80’s. Quiet, quaint…etc…again! Any articles? Have clients interested.

Unfortunately I have not writtien such an article. The town turned to depending on tourism 95% and with the pandemic many people lost their businesses, jobs, etc. We have been pushiing for funds for the soups kitchens. Many people left the island to stay with relatives on the mainland. Many lost their homes or rooms and had to move in with others.
