Mexico Immigration Aggressively Detaining Violators

Mexico Immigration Aggressively Detaining Violators Cancun Airport Sat 23 Oct

This week we posted a firsthand report in Facebook of detainees at the Cancun Airport. The above picture is of the detention center at Cancun Airport Sat 23 Oct. These are detainees and deportees picked up in the Riviera Maya for overstaying visas or not being legal. Note there are family with kids and beds on floor!

Roadside Check points

On our resent trip to Vera Cruz via bus, we encountered at least four checkpoints each way. At each stop, immigration officials accompanied by National Guard members checked each passenger’s identification. Mexican residents produced their INE card, I produced my permanent resident card. We observed one lady taken off the bus and detained by authorities for being in the country illegally.

Requirements

When traveling in Mexico, the law requires that foreign visitors carry a passport and entry permit. Be prepared to present these documents at all times. If you do not present these documents, immigration authorities may lawfully detain you for up to 60 days while they review your immigration status.

Likewise, Immigration check points are common in the interior of Mexico, including in popular tourist areas far from the border.

Actions to Take

If you are a visitor, above all, obtain entry permit (FMM) at INM office if entering Mexico through a land border and traveling beyond the immediate border area. This is the same form you must complete when entering by air. After that, you must carry your passport and entry permit (FMM) with you.

United States Citizens

Remember that U.S. citizens who reside in Mexico MUST carry your resident identification card.

Dia de Todos Los Santos & Dia de Los Muertos

Day of the Dead celebrations start on October 31 and go through November 2nd. The history of the Day of the Dead dates back over 3,000 years. Life was considered a dream. In other words, human beings are truly awake and the soul set free after death.

Dia de Todos Los Santos & Dia de Los Muertos All Saints Day

.

Día de Todos los Santos

November 1, Día de Todos los Santos (All Saints Day), Catholic Church celebrates all the saints on this Day. Día de Todos los Santos (All Saints Day) is also known as the day when the spirits of children are expected to return, and Mexicans pay homage to the souls of the children who have passed on. Tradition states that the departed descend from the heavens on this day, so family members prepare for their arrival by leaving sugar skeletons, skulls and treats on altars specially made for the occasion.

Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) Day of the Dead

Día de los Muertos

November 2, Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), is a celebration for all the adults that have passed away. Consequently, families leave the favorite food and drink of the deceased on a special altar constructed in their home or on the tomb of the departed ancestor.

It is traditional for families to visit the cemeteries where their loved ones are buried to clean and to decorate the graves with offerings to their loved ones.

Cozumel Festival of The Dead Schedule

October 28 – November 2nd

Cozumel Festival of The Dead Schedule
Cozumel Festival of The Dead Schedule
Altar de Muerto

Altar de Muerto

Altars are on display in Mexican hotels, restaurants, and other public places. These special Day of the Dead altars are decorated with candles, food, and sacred orange marigold flowers called cempaxochitl, or ¨Flor de Muerto¨ (Flower of the Dead). The best interpretation of this tradition is the movie “Coco.” If you have not seen it, I totally recommend it!

Pan de Muerto

The bread called Pan de Muerto

Pan de Muerto is a sweet bread that is baked during the Dia de los Muertos.

The bakeries on island are filled with sweets shaped in the symbols of skulls, and flowers and memorials fill the cemetery. Every bakery will be selling these treats which is a semi-sweet, sugarcoated bread made from eggs and citrus fruit flavors. Traditionally it is served with hot chocolate that has been mixed with cinnamon. Consequently, very Grocery store in Cozumel will have tons of this bread displayed this week

However, If you are ambitious, you can make your own Day of the Dead bread. This recipe takes 3 hours and 40 minutes and yields 20 slices. Here is one of many recipes that can be found online in The Cozumel Sun´s Favorite Recipes.
