Boat Sinks in Cozumel
On February 8 a boat sank in the vicinity of Playa Palancar. There were ten people on board including six children celebrating a birthday. Nine of the ten people on board, all residents, were rescued by the Mexican Navy with assistance from the vessel, Tuna.
Search and rescue for the tenth person was called off around midnight Tuesday due to darkness and strong waves. It was last reported on February 10, that search, and rescue continued for minor, Santos Guillen, by Navy, Municipal and National Police both at sea and along the coastline. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.

Aurita’s Cozumel Corner
I am writing to you from Mission Viejo California. Sharon and I arrived here on February 3 and will not return to our beautiful Cozumel until February 28. I am spending needed and way overdue quality time with two of my children and four of my grandchildren. However, I am still managing our media communications, responding to emails and calls. It is business as usual!
The Growing Cozumel Sun Book Exchange
We have an additional 150 books that are waiting to be sorted and placed on the shelves. Since grandson Julian in holding down the book exchange and store singlehandedly all month, unpacking the new books will have to wait until I return. This is the second large donation of books that we have received in the last month. We are reaching our limit of shelving and space.
The Cozumel Sun Book Exchange & Store
When you stop in for a book, please take the time to browse our little community store. There is a huge array of merchandise. Everything from office, school and art supplies to Knick knacks and other gift items. There is a rice cooker. frying pans, and even a set of pots for your herb garden! If you own your own business, we can provide Facturas for your purchases!
The Cozumel Public Library has Reached Out!
Exciting news! The Cozumel Public Library heard about our book Exchange. Momentous changes are taking place over there with the new administration. I will be meeting with them when I return.
Help Needed! The Store Needs a New Copier / Printer
We are functioning with a couple of Epson Printers more suited for home and office needs than a printing business. Our backup printer is not worth repairing. The functioning printer is at least three years old. Julian just filled a printing order for 28 forty-eight-page books for a local school. As advertised, we print and bind books. Using our current outdated printer, the job was doable, but time consuming. The one steady income we can rely on is printing and copying. Without a functioning back up printer, we are worried. Please consider donating to the book exchange store so we can purchase a professional printer.
The Cozumel Sun Book Exchange is located at 35 Avenida Sur Entre Calles 17 y 15 Bis Colonia Independencia, Cozumel. It is a bright blue home on the right side of the street, you can’t’ miss it. Store hours are Monday through Fridays eight a.m. to six p.m., Saturdays nine a.m. to five p.m. and Sundays ten a.m. to four p.m. Since we are open seven days per week have no paid staff, feel free to give us a call to confirm these hours. The store number is 987 869 3119, my cell phone is 987 118 4453. If you are calling from a U.S. telephone my number is 760-718-2588.

The Cozumel Sun Community Programs
Your donations continue to assist us in our ongoing support of Cozumel families. It has been a while since I gave the readers any specifics. One of the families we have assisted consisted of a mom that suffered from Lupus, a dad that is legally blind due to a work-related accident and a boy and girl ages 12 and 13. We are sorry to report that the mom passed away from complications of Lupus last month. The daughter has gone to live with an aunt.
The dad, David, works hard to be self sufficient and tries every means possible to care for himself and his son before asking for assistance. We help David with whatever he needs to make ends meet. This month we provided cash to help pay for a doctor consultation and medication for his eyes.
In addition to the families under our care, we continue to provide meals to walk ins, and assist with groceries, school uniforms, and supplies. Our medical equipment loan program is still up and running, and we continue to collect medicine to forward to the free clinic.
Battery Collection Campaign
A reminder that Cozumel has a used battery collection program. The Battery Collection campaign sites now includes Cozumel schools. Locate the school closest to your colony and participate in the proper disposal of batteries in Cozumel. United we can help the environment, please participate, and collect!
Reporting to CAMAR
Your cooperation is very important to maintain the urban image of the island and prevent diseases such as dengue, chikungunya and zika. CAMAR Collects items such as toilets, refrigerators, furniture, plastic containers, tires, and hoses. These are all objects that mosquitoes can thrive in. If you see any of these items in your colony, report them to CAMAR at 987 872 3553.
