The Mexico 2018 Elections Update

The news and social media has been saturated with accusations, rebuttals and mudslinging, It was depressing to read the not constructive criticism posted during live video of the last debate between the five candidates running for Municipal President of Cozumel. As a matter of fact, the entire process has been depressing. People have been streaming into the Papeleria to make copies of their credentials on their way to receive payment for supporting a candidate. Yes, one candidate for certain is buying votes, it is anyone’s guess who will win.

Mexico’s 2018 Elections and Process

The Mexican federal government is comprised of an executive branch, a bicameral congress (Senate in the upper house), a lower Chamber of Deputies, and an independent judiciary, headed by a Supreme Court.  Although the States have their own constitutions, the states’ constitutions cannot contradict the federal constitution. Further, state governance must adhere to a republican congressional system, that is headed by a state governor. State Governors may not hold office for more than six years.

Terms of Office

The elected president serves as the head of the executive branch, and commander-in-chief of the armed forces. The president is elected for a non-renewable six-year term. Congressional Representatives are elected for three-year terms in the lower house and six years in the Senate. Mexican political candidates contest seats in a single-round plurality vote, sometimes referred to as a ‘relative majority.’  This means that the winning candidate is the one who polls more votes than any other in the contest, even if the sum of those votes does not muster a majority.

The Presidential Race

The main interest in July’s elections is the presidential race.  There are four candidates in the presidential election: three representing political coalitions, and one independent. Two of the coalitions are anchored by long-established political parties.  These candidates are José Antonio Meade for PRI, Ricardo Anaya for PAN; and Andrés Manuel López Obrador for  MORENA, a relatively new party.  The independent candidate is Jaime Rodríguez Calderón.  Margarita Zavala, former First Lady and wife of former Mexican president Felipe Calderón (2006-2012), also ran as an independent candidate, but announced her withdrawal from the presidential race on May 16. Pre-poll surveys from across the political spectrum give Mr. López Obrador a commanding lead over his rivals.

The Cozumel Sun Community Service Update

Pedro is working for the Fire Department again. The 911 assignment was temporary. He is working 48 hours shifts and every other weekend. This unfortunately places the thirteen-year-old back in charge of her little sister, meals, and household on the days and weekends that he is away.

There are six families and two seniors on the island that we assist as problems arise. We continue to provide meals, employment Applications, and pens to others that find us.  We provide employment to seven locals.  There is no set date yet for Bartolo’s third operation on his arm.
