 The Cozumel Elections Results

The Cozumel Sun News Congratulates Pedro Joaquin, elected last Sunday to be Cozumel’s next Municipal President (Mayor). Pedro Óscar Joaquín Delbouis, was born on March 29, 1978, in Isla Cozumel, Quintana Roo. Joaquin is the son of current Secretary of Energy Pedro Joaquin Coldwell, and grandson of Cozumel’s Don Nassim Joaquin.

He is a Tourist entrepreneur and former president of the Parks and Musos Foundation of Cozumel. Joaquin D.  has a degree in International Relations from the Universidad Anáhuac México Norte. He has served as president of Canaco Servytur Cozumel, President of Coparmex Cozumel, President FEDETUR and Counselor of the Business Coordinating Council of Cozumel.

Current Municipal President Perla Tun Pech came in second, only a little over 3,000 votes behind Joaquin. Other candidates split approximately 9,000 votes. President Tun Pech gave an eloquent speech promising to continue to work for the betterment of Cozumel in the remaining months of her term. She vowed to do everything in her power for a smooth transition to the new administration that will take over on October 1.

México Elects Andrés Manuel López Obrador President

Anti-establishment candidate Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) has won the Mexican presidential election by a landslide. The win has the potential to bring profound changes in Mexico’s economic policy and politics. AMLO’s victory represents a blow to a political establishment tainted by corruption charges, rising crime and persistent inequality.  Here is my translation of President Elect Obrador’s first speech.

The MORENA party conquered the majority votes in the Senate (37.5%) and Congress (37.2%). The Pan Party came in next with 17.7% of the Senate votes and 18.1% of Congressional votes. These figures leave the PRI party virtually powerless holding 15.8% of votes in the senate and 16.4% of the votes in the congress.

The U.S. Tariff War

China:

The US and China are imposing billions of dollars in tariffs on each other. The Trump administration’s 25% tariffs target over 800 Chinese products worth $34 billion. This includes industrial machinery, medical devices and auto parts. China’s tariffs on US goods went into effect, and China is claiming the US is starting “the biggest trade war in economic history.”

The US plans to place tariffs on more Chinese goods, and China has vowed to retaliate. Meantime, some say a trade war could spread across Asia and push the US into a recession.

Mexico:

The Mexico Daily News reported that a second stage of retaliatory tariffs on a range of United States imports to Mexico have taken effect. This,  just over a month after the U.S. imposed duties on aluminum and steel. The federal government has now introduced tariffs on 91 United States products. The duty on pork increased this week from 10% to 20%. Other products targeted include potatoes, whiskey, apples, cranberries, a variety of cheeses and some steel products. The first round of measures took effect on June 5, just four days after the United States lifted exemptions on Mexican metal imports.

Mexicans consume 2.11 million tons of pork annually, making it the second most popular meat in the country. In 2017,  86% of Mexico’s imported meat was U.S. pork, representing just over $1.8 billion in revenue. Mexico plans to import more pork from Europe.  Mexico plans to challenge the United States’ metal  duties at the World Trade Organization.

The Separation of Immigrant Children in The U.S.

Yesterday was the deadline for U.S. officials to make sure every separated parent has a way to contact their child. Children under 5 must be reunited with their parents this week, and by July 26, all children should be reunited with their parents. Federal authorities are calling in volunteers and resorting to DNA tests to match nearly 3,000 children with their parents, from whom they were separated at the southwest border.  On Thursday, officials acknowledged for the first time that about 100 of the detained children are under the age of 5. The reunification deadline for those children is Tuesday.

Aurita’s Cozumel Corner

Hallelujah the elections are over!  Next week we can get back to normal articles of Cozumel News and information!

I feel hope for Mexico under the leadership of their newly elected President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) .  President elect Lopez Obrador is for the people. He is starting by cutting Government salaries. The outpour of love for him was infectious. As I watched a video of his speech on Facebook, comment after comment expressed fear for his safety begged him to get security immediately.

Only negative things have appeared in the headlines for the past year and a half, as the local papers got their revenge on Municipal President Perla Tun Pech for cutting off their  funding.  This week they have reported positive things. There is suddenly police patrolling my block, how about yours?

Cozumel voters have really gotten a verbal beating on the social media for being the only Municipality to elect a PRI candidate. Shame on those that sold their votes. In the defense of those that did not, the Presidency was won by 15,672 votes.  Three of the four other candidates running for municipal president had a combined total of 21,058 votes. In my opinion too many candidates tipped the election in favor of PRI.

The Cozumel Sun’s Back to School Project

The schools are out for the summer in Cozumel and we are preparing for the all important back to school fund raising effort to assist as many Cozumel children with their school needs as possible. We fully fund school supplies and fees to a few families,  we give at cost discounts to a few families, we have a layaway plan in place, and offer a 10% discount to the rest.

We have something new this month, Gift Cards of $50, $100, and $200 pesos.  In Cozumel, each child receives a list of supplies that they are required to purchase. This list varies by grade, by teacher, and by school. They specify which brand of notebook, what style, and what color they want for each topic. The same goes for paints, pencils, pens. etc.

Please keep our gift cards in mind, for the beginning of the school year and as an alternative gift for birthdays and special events.
