Cozumel Municipal Police Strike

Cozumel Municipal Police went on strike on Thursday July 12.  State Police took over patrolling the neighborhoods and military personnel were on standby.  According to The Mexico Daily News, Municipal police in Cozumel have accused  the municipality’s public security and traffic department of mismanaging federal funds allocated to the security strengthening program called Fortaseg. The protesters demanded new uniforms, the standardization of salaries, the payment of

bonuses owed for two years and the dismissal of police chief Raúl Sánchez Martínez and staff under his command.

Mayor  Perla Tun accepted the resignation of Chief Sánchez and dismissed Fortaseg Cozumel liaison María Yajaira Jiménez Azueta. She added that the municipal police force had already received two sets of uniforms and that two more were coming.  On Friday the 13th Cozumel City Council met and successfully negotiated with Municipal Police representatives.  Municipal Police will each receive  $12,000 pesos in cash and a $3,000-peso food voucher payable today, July 16th.

The  Flu Symptoms

I read that there are many reported cases of influenza in the State of Yucatan in the social media.  The Secretary of Health disputed  social media warnings stating that it is safe to travel in Yucatan.  He warned that this sensationalism is untrue and is dangerous to the economy.

Flu  signs and symptoms can include: 1. Fever of 38°C or higher 2. body ache,  Chills 3. Stuffy or Runny Nose 4. Cough 5. Headache 6. Sore throat 7. Chest Pain 8. Upset Stomach, Vomiting and/or Diarrhea.  Consult with medical expert immediately if you exhibit any of these symptoms. They will determine if it is the Flu and  decide on appropriate  inpatient or outpatient treatment.

Mexico’s President Elect Andrés Manuel López Obrador has started announcing his plan of action, starting with the elimination of hundreds of mid level Federal Government Jobs, Federal Government Employee Wage reductions, and Federal Government Benefits of current and past employees.

As you may expect, some people are not very happy, with his party holding the majority in both houses he should be able to pull it off. Go AMLO!

As of Sunday, Gasoline at the pumps reached $18.05 pesos per liter. Only the stabilization of the  Mexican Economy will stop these increases.

The Cozumel Sun’s Back to School Project

The schools are out for the summer in Cozumel and we are preparing for the all important back to school fund raising effort to assist as many Cozumel children with their school needs as possible. We fully fund school supplies and fees to a few families,  we give at cost discounts to a few families, we have a layaway plan in place, and offer a 10% discount to the rest.

We have something new this month, Gift Cards of $50, $100, and $200 pesos.  In Cozumel, each child receives a list of supplies that they are required to purchase. This list varies by grade, by teacher, and by school. They specify which brand of notebook, what style, and what color they want for each topic. The same goes for paints, pencils, pens. etc.

Please keep our gift cards in mind, for the beginning of the school year and as an alternative gift for birthdays and special events.
