Cozumel Sea Turtle Season Update

Cozumel is famous for diving, and the unique honor of hosting nests for two species of Baby Sea Turtles. These wonderful creatures hatch on the beautiful beaches of the Eastern Shore of Cozumel.  The “Other Side of the Island” hosts these little miracles every year from June to November. People travel to Cozumel from all over the world to volunteer and take part in welcoming hundreds of little turtles as they make their way to the sea.

Caretta Caretta

The Foundation of Parks and Museums of Cozumel (FPMC) has registered 290 sea turtle nests this season in the turtle camp of the Punta Sur Ecotourism Park. Five weeks after officially starting the sea turtle nesting season on the Cozumel coast, volunteers and staff from the Directorate of Conservation and Environmental Education (CEA) have tagged 195 green turtle nests (Chelonia Mydas) and 95 nests of the loggerhead species (Caretta Caretta), said the head of the unit, Rafael Chacón Díaz.

Chelonia Mydas

The biologist explained that those who are interested in joining as volunteers for the monitoring can go to the Center for Conservation and Environmental Education (CCEA), located at 65 av. Industrial area or call 85 728 14 or 85 712 52.  Staff and volunteers receive training , to ensure the safety of the turtles as the nests are well identified and registered.

Dermochelys Coriacea

Please respect the flora and fauna of Cozumel.

Renewing a Mexico Driver’s License

It was time to renew my Mexico driver’s License It was very easy to renew the Mexico driver’s license. The motor vehicle office is located in the Police station next to the Palace. Take an immediate left into the long narrow hallway and knock on the door. The room is very small and air-conditioned, entry is limited to a few people at a time. The hallway is HOT; bring a fan and a face cloth.

Hours of Operation:

8:00 am a 3:00 pm. Monday through Friday

I did not write down the fees under the impression that they would be listed on their website (wrong). The two people in front of me had to pay three hundred and something each for renewal of their motorcycle license. I was quoted $484 pesos for renewal of my automobile license.

I pleaded old age, and much to my delight they asked if I had my INAPAM (Senior Card). They were even nice enough to make a copy of my senior card and my permanent resident card for me. They charged me $242 pesos, a 50% discount.

If you need to apply for a Mexican Driver’s License, The Cozumel Sun has the instructions under Driver’s License Mexico.

What to Bring:

The Requirements listed on their website are the original license, a copy of “Comprobante de Domicilio” (CFE Bill), and a copy of your CURP. They will photograph you; no pictures are needed for renewals now.

THEY ONLY REQUIRED THE ORIGINAL LICENSE of the applicants that day. To be safe, I carry a copy of everything with me, what is required changes frequently. To receive the 50% senior discount, a copy of your Senior Card, (INAPAM) and a copy of your Visa Credentials.

The Cozumel Sun’s Back to School Project

The schools are out for the summer in Cozumel and we are preparing for the all important back to school fund raising effort to assist as many Cozumel children with their school needs as possible. We fully fund school supplies and fees to a few families,  we give at cost discounts to a few families, we have a layaway plan in place, and offer a 10% discount to the rest.

We have something new this month, Gift Cards of $50, $100, and $200 pesos.  In Cozumel, each child receives a list of supplies. This list varies by grade, by teacher, and by school. They specify which brand of notebook, what style, and what color they want for each topic. The same goes for paints, pencils, pens. etc.

Please keep our gift cards in mind, for the beginning of the school year and as an alternative gift for birthdays and special events.
