Cozumel COVID-19 Crisis: Continued Cozumel Hotel Closures

Seven Hotels Pause Operations; Flights Keep Coming

March 27

The Director of Tourism of Cozumel, Pedro Hermosillo Lopez, reported that seven lodging centers have temporarily closed their doors. This is due to the decrease in tourists caused by Covid-19. Despite of the decline, airport operations persist.

Lopez declared that to date they have a report of 400 tourists in lodging centers. This represents five percent hotel occupancy. In Comparison, from March 1 to March 15 hotel occupancy was 78%.

Likewise, he stated that the hotels still operating carry out all the prevention and hygiene measure; they are applying the protocols for the protection of visitors and employees.

On the other hand, he estimated about a thousand passengers arrive in Cozumel through the federal seaway and the cargo ferry. He acknowledged that the number will depend on whether the shipping companies partially close their services.

Finally, Hermosillo López stated that, for its part, the Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (Asur), has reported some 91 flights in the last week. These flights have connections with other parts of Mexico and abroad, mainly the United States.

Help Those That Serve Us!
March 27

PASA reports a reduction in the garbage collection routes due to the closing of many hotels and beach clubs. There are no changes in the domestic routes with the exception of an earlier collection in Colonia Centro.

PASA is providing antibacterial gel to their employees and taking their temperatures at the beginning and end of each shift as a precautionary measure.

PASA Employees have made a plea to customers that they continue to bag their trash and regularly disinfect their trash cans. This is done with alcohol or a solution of bleach and water to avoid spreading contamination. This is a great time to give that trash barrel a thorough cleaning!
