Extortion Calls and Ransoms
There has been an increase in extortion telephone calls in Cozumel. The latest seem to be conducted by an adolescent group that has added extortion of local teens for ramson.
There have been two such occurrences in the last 24 hours. In both cases the attempts to Ransome failed and the teens have been recovered. Here is a translation from the Codigo Rojo report on the second victim: “Through threats against her family, they ordered her to leave her home, destroy the chip on her cell phone, buy a new one, and move to a remote location, so she went to the Chedraui store.
Once there, they demanded that she send intimate photographs, which she sent to the number they provided, as well as a video with sexual content.
Faced with these demands, the minor collapsed, began screaming and crying, which led to more threats and insults from the extortionists.
It was at that moment that she decided to leave the bathroom, encountering the officers who were participating in her search.”
Please caution your older children and inform them of what is happening. Take steps for proper supervision of all children. In our household we have temporarily suspended our granddaughter’s group outings just to be safe.
Report Extortions Calls!
089 is the quick number to dial and report these calls. There is an entire division of cyber police that are working to track and apprehend these criminals.
