The Sacred Maya Journey Is Coming in May
The Sacred Maya Journey (Travesía Sagrada Maya) is an annual event that recreates one of the most important ancient traditions of Maya culture: the pilgrimage across the Caribbean Sea to the island of Cozumel.
Centuries ago, Maya pilgrims traveled by canoe to Cozumel to honor Ixchel, the Maya goddess associated with the moon, fertility, medicine, and weaving. The pilgrims brought offerings and sought guidance from the goddess before making the journey back to the mainland.
The Journey Begins at Xcaret
The Sacred Maya Journey begins with an opening ceremony at Xcaret Park on an evening in May.
Early the following morning, hundreds of canoeists set out from the mainland in traditional-style canoes and cross the Caribbean Sea to Cozumel. Participants train extensively for the demanding journey and represent communities throughout the region, including Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and Cozumel.
The canoeists arrive in Cozumel around midday, where they are welcomed as part of the ceremonial reenactment.
