Our Lady of Guadalupe Holiday – December 12th
Mexico and Central America celebrate this December 12th holiday in honor of Dia de Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe.
Our Lady of Guadalupe is a tradition that started in the 1600′s. She is also known as the Virgin Mary. There are other titles such as “Queen of Mexico,” “Empress of the Americas” and the “Patroness of the Americas.” Guadalupe is the most popular religious and cultural image in Mexico.
This is the most important religious holiday for many, as the Virgin of Guadalupe, is the patron saint of Mexico.

In Cozumel
As in all of Mexico, you will see processions on their way to Church from every colony of the island.
Our Lady of Guadalupe Church goes all out on her day. The church is named after him; you will see a big Statue of her out front.
The Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe is found on 65th Avenida and Calle 8. Norte. It is a beautiful sight.
Many locals pin Milagros (miracles) and paper or real roses near the statue of the Virgin of Guadalupe. These Milagros are small, silver, or tin objects in the shape of hearts, arms, or legs. These symbolize the givers’ thanks for the cure of those articles.
Festivals include food and prayers. Mexican television will broadcast the event that takes place in the Basilica of Guadalupe live. Thousands of people travel from all over Mexico to attend the beautiful Service.
How It Started
On December 9, 1531, Juan Diego, was walking home and saw a vision of a young woman. The location was a hill in Tepeyac, near Mexico City, Mexico. Juan was a simple peasant,
The young woman was surrounded by light and told Diego that she wanted a church built in her honor. Diego recognized that she was the Virgin Mary.
He went to the local bishop and told him of his vision. The bishop asked Diego to return to the Lady and ask for proof in the form of a miracle.

Diego returned to the Lady, and she told him to gather flowers from the hill. (It was winter and the flowers had not bloomed. Yet, that day Diego found flowers of every sort. Upon returning the Virgin fashioned the flowers into a peasant cloak.
Three days later the when Diego opened the cloak for the bishop the flowers fell to the floor. Miraculously, on Diego’s cloak, was the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe.
Today the cloak is displayed in the Basilica of Guadalupe.

In December of 2010, my family and I happened to be driving from the United States to Cozumel. On December 12th we drove from the early morning way into the night.
We had missed our normal stop and drove until three or four in the morning is search of a hotel.
Amazingly, we passed young people running with their torches in the dark over mountains. The entire experience from morning to night was magical.

The Cozumel Sun is back! Well, we are struggling to come back!! We have had website problems and serious financial setbacks. It is December, my fixed income is going to our commitment to ten local children and three families.
The Cozumel Sun Website
Please excuse us if you have tried the website and it is down. Virtually daily, since the October issue, I have placed a service call, A service person fixes the website. The next morning it is down again. On days that I am traveling to doctor appointments, the site has been unreachable. I will continue to struggle with them to permanently fix the issue.
Book Exchange Update
We have a respectable number of books in stock. This month we are scheduled to pick up our shelving and the hundreds of books from the Cozumel Public Library.
Unfortunately, I need funds to rent a truck and pay at least two people to make the move. We will probably have to wait until after the holidays.

The address: Avenida 35 between Calles 17 & 15 Bis (Blue house #1081) to better serve our community. The sign is no longer there; the cost is $800 for a new sign.
The store license
The store will be in Julian’s name. This will guarantee that after I am no longer around, the Cozumel Sun can continue to serve our community. Most of you met Julian at the book exchange. Julian is 23 and will be running the store and book exchange while continuing his education online.
While we are not officially open yet, we are available from nine to two daily. There is a bell set in the windowsill. We have resumed holding an ongoing Garage Sale to help with our operating expenses.
Once we officially open, Julian will need startup funds for supplies.
¡Mi casa es tu Casa! The store is part of our home. Do not hesitate to come by or call if you need immediate help!
Please Help!
We need your help to get Julian set up! Funds are needed for licensing and fees, supplies, and the movers. Garage Sale items and donations of any amount will be greatly appreciated!
