There is always something happening in Cozumel! From traditional Mexican celebrations and religious festivals to international sporting events and beloved island traditions, this calendar highlights some of the major annual activities to watch for.

Dates for some annual events vary from year to year. We will update the calendar as official dates are announced.

September 2026 — Patriot Month 🇲🇽

September is Patriot Month (Mes de la Patria) throughout Mexico, with streets, businesses, and public spaces decorated in the colors of the Mexican flag.

16 September — Mexican Independence Day
One of Mexico’s most important national holidays, celebrated with patriotic ceremonies, music, food, and festivities.

September 20 — IRONMAN 70.3 Cozumel
Athletes from around the world travel to Cozumel for this internationally recognized triathlon.

October 2026

October 31 — Halloween – Buy lots of candy and go to town square! There are many activities in the main Parks including Candy Exchanges and Costume Contests. A must attend is a Charity event hosted by the Humane Society of Cozumel Island. Decorations are everywhere for the Day of the Dead Festival!

October 31 – Start Day of The Dead – In Mexico, October 31 marks the start of the traditional Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos) celebrations. Families finish setting up home altars (ofrendas) and welcome back the souls of young children, known as los Angelitos, who are believed to return from the afterlife at midnight.

Cozumel Island Bird Festival
The 18th Annual Festival de las Aves Isla Cozumel (Cozumel Island Bird Festival) is expected to take place in late October 2026, continuing the tradition set by previous mid-to-late October events on the island. Exact daily schedules and precise dates for the 2026 installment are finalized closer to autumn by the local organizing committee via the Festival de las Aves Isla Cozumel Facebook Page.

Expected Activities

Guided Birdwatching: Expert-led morning and afternoon field trips across local ecological hotspots like Punta Sur (Parque Ecológico Estatal Laguna Colombia) and the San Gervasio Mayan site.

Environmental Fairs: Interactive community booths, games, and workshops hosted by local environmental groups and the Fundación de Parques y Museos de Cozumel.

Academic Talks & Culture: Educational presentations on Cozumel’s endemic species (such as the Cozumel Wren) and migratory patterns.

November 2026

November 1 & 2 — Day of the Dead (Día de Muertos)

Mexico’s colorful tradition honoring and remembering loved ones who have passed away. In Mexico, a vibrant, multi-day holiday celebrated annually from November 1 to November 2, during which families honor and welcome back the souls of deceased relatives. Rather than a time of mourning, it is a joyful, colorful celebration of the continuity of life.

The Specific Meaning of Each Day

While the broader holiday spans both days, each specific date serves a distinct traditional purpose:

November 1 (Día de los Angelitos / All Saints’ Day): This day is strictly dedicated to honoring deceased children. Families decorate their graves and home altars with toys, balloons, and sweets to comfort the returning spirits of the “little angels”.

November 2 (Día de los Muertos / All Souls’ Day): This is the official Day of the Dead and is dedicated to honoring deceased adults. At midnight, the spirits of the adults are believed to return, and the grandest public festivities take place. This day is an official public holiday across Mexico.

November 8 – GFNY Cozumel

The annual cycling event attracts riders from Mexico and around the world. The event features a Long Course (160 km / two laps around the island) and a Medium Course (80 km / one lap) starting in downtown Cozumel.

November 14 & 15 – Annual Tatoo Expo

The event brings together local and visiting tatoo artists , live music, and art displays on the island.

November 22 – IRONMAN Cozumel

One of Cozumel’s largest international sporting events of the year. IRONMAN Cozumel Latin American Championship takes place  in San Miguel de Cozumel, and acts as a major qualifier offering slots for the 2027 World Championship.

December 2026

12 December — Our Lady of Guadalupe Holiday

The Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe falls on Saturday, December 12, 2026. This historic holiday honors the 1531 apparitions of the Virgin Mary to Juan Diego in Mexico City,

Key Traditions:

Las Mañanitas: Mariachis and singers serenade the Virgin at midnight on December 11 into the early hours of December 12.

Pilgrimages: As in all of Mexico, you will see the faithful travel on foot, by bike, or on knees to local churches.

Mass and Offerings: Special church services feature floral arrangements, traditional indigenous matachins dances, and festive family meals.

December 24 — Christmas Eve (Nochebuena)

Nochebuena (Christmas Eve) on December 24 is the true heart of the winter holiday season, serving as the main family celebration, late-night feast, and religious focal point, rather than Christmas Day itself.

Core Traditions:

La Última Posada: December 24 marks the final night of the Posadas, the nine-day series of processions re-enacting Mary and Joseph’s journey.

Misa de Gallo: Many families attend Midnight Mass (La Misa de Gallo) to welcome Christmas Day at midnight.

Fireworks: Neighborhoods light up with festive fireworks and sparklers as midnight approaches.

Festive Foods; La Cena Navideña: The grand family dinner often starts late (10:00 PM or 11:00 PM) and runs past midnight. Classic Dishes: Tables feature tamales, pozole, roast turkey or pork, bacalao (salted cod), and romeritos in mole. Seasonal Drinks: Warm fruit punch (ponche navideño) and creamy rompope are served.

December 31 — New Year’s Eve

Celebrating New Year’s Eve (Nochevieja) on December 31 in Cozumel, Mexico offers a vibrant mix of Caribbean beach parties, special restaurant galas, and local Mexican traditions like eating 12 grapes at midnight for good luck. Many locals spend the night on the beaches of the other side of the island to await the sunrise of the new year.

2027

February 2027

Cozumel Carnaval – Feb 6 – 9
One of Cozumel’s most colorful and anticipated annual celebrations, featuring parades, costumes, dancing, music, and community festivities. While the main events are scheduled to run from February 6th to February 9th, 2027, there are many activities around the island for weeks leading up to it. Marking its historic 153rd anniversary, this celebration stands as one of Mexico’s oldest and most enthusiastic Mardi Gras traditions

April / May 2027

El Cedral Festival of Santa Cruz de Sabán
One of Cozumel’s oldest and most important traditional celebrations, combining history, religion, music, dancing, food, and community events.

May 2027

The Annual Sacred Mayan Journey
An annual reenactment honoring the ancient Maya pilgrimage to Cozumel and the goddess Ixchel.

Note: The Sacred Mayan Journey was cancelled in 2026. Check for confirmation and official dates for the 2027 event.

Meetup Cozumel — Tuesdays

Meetup Cozumel brings together residents, newcomers, and visitors for a casual weekly gathering.

The group meets at different locations around the island, offering a fun way to discover Cozumel’s restaurants, waterfront spots, homes, condos, and other local favorites while meeting new people.

Ladies Breakfast Club

Cozumel Ladies Breakfast Club — Twice Monthly on Wednesdays

The Cozumel Ladies Breakfast Club brings women together twice a month for breakfast, conversation, and friendship.

It is a wonderful opportunity for longtime residents, newcomers, seasonal residents, and visitors to meet other women and become more connected with the Cozumel community.

Museo de la Isla de Cozumel

The Museo de la Isla de Cozumel (Museum of Cozumel Island) offers visitors an engaging look at the island’s history, culture, natural environment, and traditions.

The museum features 11 interactive rooms, along with temporary exhibition spaces showcasing the work of local, national, and international artists. A special exhibition room pays tribute to more than 146 years of Cozumel’s Carnival tradition, one of the island’s most important cultural celebrations.

The museum is accessible to visitors and includes restrooms and an elevator.

FPMC Discount Credential

The Museo de la Isla is operated under the Fundación de Parques y Museos de Cozumel (FPMC).

If you are a Cozumel resident or Mexican citizen, you may qualify for an FPMC Discount Credential, which provides special rates at participating FPMC parks and attractions.
